He helped by changing the way people thought about themselves and giving them realization to their rightsHe believed that the purpose of government was to protect our rights and should be based on natural law (physical universe and human relations). People should have the right to life, liberty, and right to own property. Thus, I created a book, Two Treatises of Civil Government. Representative government, people elected representatives to create laws and conduct government affairs for them. They looked at John Locke for inspiration, his ideas were called "textbook of the American Revolution." This helped by giving the basis of protest and revolt in the colonies. Self-government helped by giving Americans useful training to be prepared when the colonies separated. The 13 colonies had charter or proprietary. Charter colonies had a grant of rights and privileges. Proprietary colonies were owned by a small group of proprietors. But, this type of government only gave some people a voice. They then built the first colleges, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and Mary. Education also helped by training ministers, since their education also had something to do with religion.
