School Counseling Philosophy

Entering the counseling field has given me this intense desire to want to help others. Not only for the fundamental challenges we face daily, but helping individuals face equal opportunity, diversity, and recognizing that all individuals learn differently. I want students to know they can confide in me as their counselor and know that my office is a safe environment for them. Becoming a counselor in a school setting, I want to help students strengthen their belief in their ability, stress the meaning of hard work and learning, and set goals for their future. Understanding my students motivates me to be devoted to them while encouraging their development through their school years. I want to be friendly, assess well, prepare them for life beyond school, be an excellent communicator to my students and parents, administration, and any outside references. Lastly, having a sense of humor and gain the trust of my students. Being able to laugh at me and offer amusing stories for what I have experienced in life will show students that I, too, am human! Sharing things with laughter is a crucial trait for any school counselor and goes a great way toward making your day and profession brighter every day!

Peer-reviewed article reflection

I chose this article because it defines the curriculum and structural development to support students' knowledge and skills for their level. Curriculum development assists with academics, social guidance, career development, and personal life obstacles that may arise. The article expresses the importance of school counselors and how students scored better than those who did not receive these resources when counseling materials were given.
Individual planning, responsive services, individual and group counseling, peer mediation, and program management were effective interventions used on all grade levels. The results showed that guidance exercises were more efficient with the middle school and high school levels than the elementary level. Responsive services seem to offer more effectiveness at the elementary and high school levels than at the middle school. The study showed breaking down into small groups helped get information across to students better instead of group activities for an entire class. As for my reflection, I did not have a lot of success with school counselors in my school years. I don't believe school counselors were as effective then as they are now. During my years in high school, I lost a lot of friends due to drugs. There were never programs led by a counselor to assist us in dealing with grief or even the pressure of drugs in a social setting. My drive to become a school counselor is to ensure all students get the attention and assistance they need to ensure they have someone by their side.

On the Freshman and Sophomore levels, improve students' behaviors and general attitude toward school while also designing a developmental plan for the following years. I would also add a questionnaire that we will review each year and touch upon scholarships, continuing education programs, honors classes, athletic programs, and future goals.

Junior: Discuss the Junior year timeline, provide links to college boards, and inform students on how to search for schools and tips on best preparing for senior year. Also, discuss time management and test-taking skills to prepare for any academic test like the SAT.

Seniors: Meet in conferences to review everything college-related or provide military options if that is a route they would like to take—assistance with graduation requirements, college applications, and any help related to setting up campus tours. Conclude graduation plan.

Gender-Career and Weight Implicit Bias Test Results

For the gender-career implicit bias test, my results suggested little or no automatic association between females and males with career and family. For this test, my results were not surprising. I feel gender should not be the result of what job you strive for success. Gender and career are so far past what people think it should be. In the presidential election, it was made a huge deal for Kamala Harris to become the Vice President of the United States. However, I saw it as she should be Vice President or even the next President. We are in such different times now that every gender, race, ethnicity should be welcomed for becoming anything they aim to be in life. As a school counselor, this is something I will make sure is stressed to my students.
As for the weight implicit bias test, I found my results to be surprising. My results suggested a moderate automatic preference for thin people over fat people. Although I was surprised by my results, it took me a minute to think about why I had the results I did. As a society, we are made to feel this way, and although I may not be consciously thinking it, it has already been embedded into me. Without looking at the percentage web results, I assumed the majority had a strong automatic preference for thin people over fat people. For someone who has had weight loss surgery, I see the difference in how society treats me now compared to how they treated me before surgery. As a school counselor in training, I know why it is essential to know our biases. We have to advocate for the social change of body image so our students don't have to deal with the same things we may have gone through.

School Counseling Competency Assessment Reflection

While taking the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies Assessment, I found my scores varied. Mindsets we're high in the score while Behaviors: Professional Foundation found to be lower. Scores for B-PF3; Apply legal and ethical principles of the school counseling profession were more of a one for developing versus a three for distinguished. Since I am yet to take a class on legal issues and policies, I did not find these results surprising. Also, I found demonstrating the impact of cultural, social, and environmental influences on student success and opportunities to be more of a two until next quarter when I take multicultural school counseling. Upon completion of that class, I will know the dynamics of cross-cultural communication. Although I did well on the Behaviors: Direct and Indirect student service, I think I need improvement in all areas. I find myself to be a hands-on learner. I also believe that I will better understand and relate adequately during an internship or practicum setting.
