The book was recently adapted into a Disney picture and has since become a classic.

The protagonist of the book is fifth-grader Jess Aarons, who makes friends with the new girl in his little town in rural Virginia. Before coming to a sad conclusion, they form a close connection and construct their own make-believe world.

More than 30 years ago, Paterson's son David gave her the go-ahead to publish the book. His age was eight. He wrote the screenplay for his mother's well-known novel, which he says took the better part of 17 years to complete.

The book "Bridge to Terabithia" depicts the situation in the US state of Virginia, in a little community that is just a few kilometers from Washington, D.C. and is primarily populated by individuals of modest means, including Jesse's family. The time period for "Bridge to Terabithia" was the late 1970s, which also happened to be a time of economic difficulty in the US known as the "stagflation period."The term "stagflation period" describes a time in American economic history when the nation's economy grew at an incredibly sluggish rate while prices were rapidly rising. High unemployment, rising gas prices, an economic recession, and inflation defined this time period. As the reader can see, this element has an impact on the characters in Katherine Paterson's "Bridge to Terabithia."
