In Antonio's day, attractive women were thicker, curvy women of modest dress. These women were viewed as "healthy". Men were considered attractive if they were tall, strong, and hard workers. Men worked outside the home, while women tended to the home, bills, and the family. It is common to talk openly about relatives that have passed as it shows respect and admiration.

It was customary to get approval from a woman's family before getting married. Children almost always came after marriage and there were usually many children, as birth control in any form was against religious practices. Most second marriages occurred out of convenience as the first spouse had often passed away due to illness or injury. Antonio's first wife died after the birth of their 3rd child and he remarried a woman whose husband had passed and she needed assistance in caring for her first child and he with his 3. They had grown to love each other and had 4 more children together. In this culture, the youth worked hard to show their worth, while the elderly are respected as teachers and leaders. Once an elderly family member is unable to live on their own, they move in with family (usually children) and become teachers , passing down family history and traditions.

Antonio once viewed illness as a curse but has grown to accept that his illnesses were caused from his past work and "being old". Curvier women were viewed as good for having children and men that were strong and lean were looked at as hard workers. Antonio can still see his broad shoulders and large hands and describes them as being this way from a life of hard work. Antonio is a devout Catholic, he says grace before each meal and attends church for all religious holidays and holy days praying for continued health and the protection of God. He still continues some superstitions, such as not visiting someone that is ill for fear of "catching it", he always leaves a window open so that the fresh air can get in (for health), and he swears by lemon and garlic. Antonio also has a bottle of blessed oil that he uses for arthritis pains. He is currently living with his son and is mostly cared for by his daughter in law, although he wishes they would go to church more.

Aside from frequent visits to the church, Antonio continues to pray to different saints for strength and health. He carries with him a St Christopher and St Michael medallion everywhere he goes. He has received the Sacrament of the Sick and will receive his Last Rites when the time comes.

I enjoyed completing this interview. I learned that for Antonio, life was hard, often working 2 jobs to provide for his family. He had no time for illness and his wife was often the one providing his medical care which consisted of herbal remedies. Even now he is reluctant to go to the doctor unless forced by his family, as Antonio is reluctant to spend money on medicine or doctor visits despite having health insurance and his level of health literacy is rather low due to his limited education.
This interview solidified that there is usually a reason as to why someone of a different culture acts and reacts the way they do. It is up to us as the medical provider to look deeper into a patients background to provide the best possible care.
