In the early nineteenth century, the British colonized their lands. After 40 years of mostly unsuccessful fighting with the British,  and in 1856, a 15 year old girl named Nonqawuse had a spiritual experience in which she was told that the Xhosa people had to destroy all of their farms and kill all of their cattle. Once that was done, the British would leave their land and a "New day" would begin. This prophecy spread amongst the Xhosa people. The Xhosa killed 400,000 cattle and after doing that, they expected that the dead would rise up from the ground on the full moon in June, 1856. Since the prophecy did not come true, the leader of the Xhosa stated that it did not work because some of the Xhosa had kept cattle for themselves. So he postponed the event until the full moon of the upcoming August and ordered people to kill hte cattle that they had saved. This led to a lot of infighting between the believers and the nonbelievers. In 1857, the Xhosa had no food and many resorted to cannibalism as a last resort to stay fed.
