After dropping out of Virginia University, the relationship between he and his foster father was strained. After the military, Poe joined Westpoint Academy owing to his father's request, but dropped out again, because of this he was disowned.

When poe was 26, he fell in love with his cousin, Virginia Clemm, who was just 13 years old at the time. Although strange, it was said to be a happy and almost platonic relationship. However, she also died of tuberculosis when they were a bit older. Poe was rumored of having a small romance with the poet Francis Osgood, but another poet, Elizabeth Ellet, was romantically interested in Poe, though he did not at all feel the same, saying he "could do nothing but repel with scorn."

The first literary work that he published was ¨Tamerlane ¨ in june of 1827. However, the poem that made him popular was ¨The Raven,¨ but other works by him include ¨The Cask of Amontillado,¨ ¨The Telltale Heart,¨ and more. He was employed and paid quite little, he was one the first few to make a living off of writing, but not much of a living. However, he got a new job for a newspaper company, critiquing other's writing, and later publishing his own. This newspaper employment is when he actually began to get famous, and when he published his larger literary works.

After the death of his wife, Poe moved to Philadelphia while seeking another job. Suddenly, he was wiped off the face of the Earth. He was found nearly a week later, incoherent to reality, and in someone else's clothing, dying a few days later. There are many theories to what actually happened to him, but none too substantial. The writer Rufus Griswold violated his reputation after death, out of sheer pettiness and a general disliking of Poe.
