1.1. The situation of newly arrived migrants and refugees is a complex topic and it can seem quite daunting to start addressing this topic in the classroom. Which specific aspects of this topic do you feel less confident about? Where do you see your own information gaps? What are your goals for this course?

When it comes to a terrorist attack, I first let them tell me what they know so far, and then I inform them as objectively as possible. Then I tell them about prominent Greek people who became refugees during the dictatorship that took place in Greece in the years 1967-1974. I also tell them about prominent Greek people whose ancestors came in Greece as refugees in 1922 (in 1922 about 1,500,000 refugees came in Greece from Asia Minor).

There is a theatre play “My dear Smyrna”, which talks about the refugees who came in Greece in 1922.

Erika’s ideas are very useful.

As earthquakes take place often in Greece, I think it would be useful to share with my pupils experience of flight in case of an earthquake. The flight in earthquakes have things in common with flights of refugees: your life is in danger, you are not prepared to flight, you have no choice but to flight, you have no time to take much of your personal belongings…

I have personal stories with regard to earthquakes. I experienced the strong earthquakes in Athens, Greece both in 1981 and in 1989 (during the earthquake of 1981 my family and I fled with our pyjamas, as the earthquake took place at night!). In 1985 my cousins’ houses were destroyed during the earthquake that took place in Kalamata, Greece… In 2008 I experienced the strong earthquake that took place in Patras, Greece.

2.6. How can we positively shape the use of social media when it comes to the topic of newly arrived migrants. Social media can be a powerful tool for positive and negative use, so how can we help our students understand and shape the exchanges happening on social media in a positive way? Share your thoughts.

I think that Alicia refers to the media education. Through media education pupils should sort unreliable from reliable information. I realize that more time should be given in media education. In this way pupils should realize the validity of the information given (who spreads the news – rumors etc).
