Halloween is an American slasher film, made in 1978 and directed by John Carpenter. The whole film was set in a calm, suburban town and the plot focuses on the psycho killer, Michael Myers, who escapes a mental asylum after 15 years, and starts murdering, many teenagers in his home town. Carpenter was extremely inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ – 1960, as it was regarded as the most classic of all horror films in that era, as well as being very influential. This could evidently be seen in this film, as Carpenter used the famous orchestra who were known for their iconic “violin strings”, in his movie too, as well as being influenced by his Hitchcock’s narrative.

The main characters in this film are a typical group of teenage girls, who become the victims of the antagonist, Michael Myers. Carpenter uses three different stereotypes to represent these conventional high school girls; one girl is portrayed as being the very flirty and pretty one, the other is the feisty and rebellious girl and the last one is the shy and intelligent one. Carpenter chose to represent these characters in a specific way, in order to evoke a sense of visual meaning. This was because Carpenter wanted the cast to behave and dress like the typical high school girls of that era, so that the audience would easily be able to relate to them, as well as, feeling like they know the character already by using mise-en-scene, costumes and props. This would, therefore, give the audience a sense of their vulnerability as well as portraying how undeserving they were for the horrors they encountered, despite their characteristics.

The narrative structure of this film follows a typical order of a beginning and end, as well as a series of unfortunate events that take place between these two. This narrative structure closely pursues Todorov’s Narrative theory, as there is equilibrium, disequilibrium and lastly, a new equilibrium. The equilibrium begins from the disturbing scene of Michael Myers murdering his sister; however, to balance this, Carpenter shows the next scene being very brightly lit and a young high school girl walking through a calm neighbourhood. Following this, we see the disruption of the equilibrium, as the audience witness the escape of Michael Myers from the mental institution. The recognition of the disruption occurs when the doctor witnesses his escape and follows the antagonist to his hometown. Towards the end of the film we see the attempt to repair the disruption, in order to restore the normal lives of the characters, which occurs when Laurie defends herself and tries to kill Michael. Lastly, is the new equilibrium, which doesn’t progress much as in the last scene, we see that the body of the antagonist has disappears, which could therefore, create another cycle of the narrative structure.
