I'm really excited about this course and cohort. I expect to learn more about how facilitate staff development in online spaces - I almost always do. I also expect to learn lots from everyone on the course about their specific contexts and challenges. I am always so grateful for your openness! Finally, I am always a little concerned about how interactive people will be - having a positive experience on the course is really linked to being an active participant and not everyone always does that.

I catch feelings when I read my student's course evaluations and I felt like they were ungrateful for all the work I put in to prepare for their lectures. however, After a while I read them again and it made me want to improve my teaching skills. it is one thing to know your work and its a completely different ball game sharing that information with students.

I look forward to gaining new knowledge about teaching and learning strategies to put myself in a better position within academia. My major concerns are balancing work and studying, and understanding what is considered enough preparation for a lecture.

I've been teaching the same things for 6 years now and I want to add a bit of flair to the delivery and content. While I have a PGCE for basic (secondary) education, I've never been formally schooled in education at a tertiary level, so I'm hoping that this course will give me some tools to improve my teaching and the students' learning.
I'm concerned that the course will become buried in the plethora of other things that have to get done, but I will try my best to remain engaged and active!

The excitement is because there is a lot to learn but the nerves are because the course is online and I hope that I will be able to keep up with the space.

I am currently doing my PGDIP in Higher ed (part time) and this course blends in nicely with my studies. I am looking forward to learning about the contexts in the space and how mine fits in or is different from others

I am keen to learn about the theory that underlies course design and delivery because I am undertaking a review/relook at the courses I teach.
My concern is that I will not stay up-to-date with the input required for the six weeks. I am looking forward to trying to, though!

I have been lecturing on an ad-hoc basis at UCT for several years, but have recently been employed to teach full-time. This comes with a host of new challenges and responsibilities, necessitating new teaching skills. I think this course is an excellent starting point on my journey to become a better teacher. I expect I will emerge with a host of new skills for designing and conveying course material, managing timelines and responsibilities, and contextualising my teaching to the benefit of my students. I also expect I will develop a renewed and reinvigorated vision for teaching, and a new appreciation for the hard work my own lecturers have put in over the years. I only have two concerns: the one is practical - I have 200 contact hours of teaching over the next two months...and I'm trying to move house...so I'm going to be very busy, and taking on this course puts some extra pressure on. But I am sure it will be well-worth it. My other concern is that I'm going to find out I've been doing something horribly wrong in my teaching the last few years. But, if that happens, I am content knowing I will be able to resolve it moving forward :)

I have done some ad-hoc lecturing and hope to do a lot more throughout my career. So I want to be the best teacher I can be! My biggest classroom challenges so far are:

1. I spend so much time (too much?) preparing the most engaging possible lectures, but then the students disappoint me by not doing the readings or other work required. This makes me resentful, which eventually makes me care less about them.

2. I struggle with playing an authoritarian role. I *hate* having to keep telling them to keep quiet. Again, this makes me resentful, which is not a productive way to engage with a class!

I hope that this course will help me rethink my role in the classroom, so that I can stay true to myself and maintain a positive attitude towards students.

I'm firmly on the treadmill since I started as an academic UCT nearly 18 years ago! No-one taught me how to prepare lectures, or how to lecture and assess the progress of the students in all these years - it's just been a race against time for myself and for the students.
I signed up in the hope of getting a firmer grip and valuable introspection. Unfortunately, I have lagged way behind from Day 1 of the course due to the glue between my shoes and the treadmill of academia....!
