Cotswold Morris, which is one of the most widespread and well-known styles of Morris dancing seen today, originates from the South Midlands of England. This region includes areas such as Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Warwickshire, although it extends beyond these specific boundaries (The Morris Ring, 2018).

Cotswold Morris dancing is not only a traditional folk dance but also a cultural expression that connects communities to their historical roots. The colourful costumes, intricate choreography, and distinctive props like handkerchiefs and sticks make Cotswold Morris a visually and aurally engaging form of traditional dance in England (The Morris Ring, 2018).

References

euronews.

In the 1700s, meat was a luxury in Britain, and wasting any part of it was unthinkable. In the North of England, where essential fats were scarce, the juices released during roasting were precious. As wheat flour became more available, traditional cakes and puddings emerged, including pancakes and Yorkshire puddings. Instead of letting meat drippings go to waste, Northerners created the ingenious "dripping pudding." The first recipe, in 1737's "The Whole Duty of a Woman," instructed cooks to use pancake batter to catch meat drippings beneath a roasting joint, adding flavour and colour. These puddings were later dubbed Yorkshire puddings in 1747, gaining fame for their crispy, fluffy texture cooked over coal fires (Burns, 2021).

References

Burns, J.

May Day is a celebration marking the start of summer, and it has its origins in ancient pagan festivals. It's like a combination of three older celebrations: Beltane, which celebrated the arrival of summer and fertility; Walpurgisnacht, which is the night before a Christian feast day; and Floralia, an ancient Roman festival dedicated to the goddess Flora. People in the UK have been celebrating May Day in various special ways for many centuries (BBC, 2018).

My family celebrate this bank holiday in their home village of Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire. However, its appeal goes beyond aesthetics, as herbal practitioners have harnessed its therapeutic properties for centuries. One of its notable benefits lies in its application as a natural remedy for various skin issues. For instance, the dried Marigold flower can be gently applied to alleviate discomfort and reduce swelling caused by insect bites or stings (daniel.hani@sprylab.com, n.d.)

References

daniel.hani@sprylab.com.

Country focus: Afghanistan

Afghanistan has endured over four decades of turmoil, including conflicts, natural disasters, persistent poverty, and food shortages. This has led to the emergence of one of the world's largest refugee populations, with 2.6 million registered Afghan refugees globally. A significant portion, approximately 2.2 million, has sought refuge in Iran and Pakistan alone. Additionally, an estimated 3.5 million people have been displaced within Afghanistan, forced to flee their homes in search of safety. The security situation in Afghanistan rapidly deteriorated in 2021, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian crisis. This has caused a continuous influx of people seeking refuge, and it is likely that this trend will persist (The UN Refugee Agency, 2022).

Three common health issues Afghan refugees face include malaria, hepatitis B and tuberculosis, as outlined by (Foundation House, n.d.).

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoa of the Plasmodium genus and transmitted by mosquitoes.
Australian guidelines recommend hospital admission initially for all falciparum malaria patients, but non-severe cases can receive outpatient care. Asymptomatic or uncomplicated falciparum malaria patients able to take oral medication should use artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), specifically artemether-lumefantrine (Riamet®), obtainable via prescription for confirmed or suspected falciparum infection. Severe cases require immediate hospitalisation and expert consultation (Foundation House, 2015).

Hepatitis B, a liver infection, can be acute or chronic. Chronic cases may lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. It spreads via infected body fluids and from mother to child. No specific treatment exists for acute hepatitis B, but comfort measures and a nutritious diet help. Chronic hepatitis B can be managed with medications like tenofovir or entecavir, benefiting liver health and longevity. Lifelong treatment is often required (World Health Organization, 2021).

Tuberculosis (TB), primarily affecting the lungs, results from mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. It spreads through the air when individuals with TB cough, sneeze, or spit and is highly infectious. TB is curable and treated with a standard 6-month regimen of four antibiotics, including rifampicin and isoniazid. In cases of drug-resistant TB, where standard drugs are ineffective, treatment is more prolonged and intricate (World Health Organization, 2020).

References

Britannica. (2011). After reading this competency standard I can now recognise the importance of understanding my own cultural beliefs, biases, and values and how they may impact my interactions with patients from diverse backgrounds.

I will strive to actively provide culturally safe care and cultural awareness by regularly reflecting on my own cultural background and experiences. I think this sort of self-awareness will help me provide more respectful and patient-centred care. This includes addressing any biases I may have and continuously improving my cultural competence. I believe in open and effective communication, and I will make an effort to ensure that language barriers or cultural differences do not hinder effective patient interactions. I respect the autonomy of all patients, regardless of their cultural background. I believe cultural values and beliefs play a significant role in their healthcare decisions, and I intend to ensure that their choices are honoured and supported.
