After World War II drew to a close in the mid 20th century , a new conflict began. Known as the Cold War, this battle was between the world's two great powers- the capitalist Unites States and the communist Soviet Union. Beginning in the late 1950s, space would became another dramatic arena for this competition as each side sought to prove the superiority of its technology, its military fire power and-by extension-its political-economic system. On October 4, 1957 a Soviet R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile launched Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite and the first man-made object to be placed into the Earth’s orbit. In 1958, the U.S. launched its own satellite, Explorer I, designed by the U.S. Army under the direction of a rocket science. In 1959, the Soviet space program took another step forward with the launch of Luna 2, the first space probe to hit the moon.

The Space Race eventually brought an end to the Cold War and led up to further joint ventures between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Technological inovations were gained

Led to the invention of computers

Increased the distance and accuracy of rockets

After Sputnik, students are now requried to take math and science because the Untied States thought that we were behind in those subjects.

Most state tests are now based of off mainly math and science.

NASA played a big role in the Space Race. They had to build the equipment to allow the Americans to go into space against Russia. Many of the space programs involved over 34,000 NASA employees and the budget was increased 500 percent.
