Atomic Bomb Debate by

One of the most controversial turning points in history was the decision made by U.S. President Harry S. Truman to use atomic weapons on Japan, the lone remaining Axis Power at the conclusion of World War II. In your opinion, was the decision to drop atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki a military necessity? If not, was it justifiable for a reason other than military necessity?

The U.S. dropped two bombs on two major cities in Japan, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The U.S. dropped the bombs in hope of Japan surrendering ending WW2 in which they did. The reason the U.S. dropped the bombs instead of attacking Japan with soldiers is because it was estimated that millions of U.S. soldiers lives would have been lost trying to attack the main island of Japan. The U.S. tried to warn Japan of what they were going to do but they did not care, even after the first bomb was dropped Japan didn’t surrender it took both bombs. The lives that soldiers would have lost was not worth it.

Andrew Scallo

The U.S. bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima and killed over 200,000 citizens as a result. It left thousands of people homeless and since then, atomic bombs were never used in war due to the fear of their damage. These bombs have left an everlasting effect on the survivors as well. Because of their exposure to radiation, they are now at high risk of getting cancer, and giving their kids genetic diseases. Even if the other options America considered would not have been as effective, it was completely unfair to have changed these peoples lives forever and even then potentially their kids who had nothing to do with the war at all.

Brett Lepine

FOR THE BOMBING The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima not only killed many, but destroyed many buildings, parks, houses and lots more. The estimated death count of this was around 300,00 people. Document G shows us a picture of how large this one bomb was and how powerful it was. Although this was bad it’s not as bad as it could have been. As stated in in document F, if we were to invade Japan, millions were estimated to die. Knowing this, our president had to make a choice. Document K tells us that President Truman thought that dropping this bomb was the way to end the war. Knowing all this, the best choice was to use the bombs to end the war with 1000’s of casualties, instead of millions.

It is true that the bombs affected many people at the time and many people to come. But if it weren't for the bomb those kids would be sent to die for their country because we'd still probably be at war with them today. Those kids may have been born differently because of the bombs but without the bombs they those kids's kids would be fighting today.

We should not have to drop a huge bomb on Japan. This is just suicide! The U.S would be harming Japanese who are not part of the war, like innocent people. Also this huge bomb has a lot of deadly radiation which will affect children. Not just children born around the time of the war but, generations of children after it. It is just wrong and cruel!

Juliane Sherman

I think that its unrealistic to assume we would still be at war today if it wasn't for that bombing. There were other options that may have been less effective but nonetheless still would've been a contributing factor to the war ending. The fact that no one has used an atomic bomb in war since then because of these bombs effects is enough in itself to say that using it in the first place was wrong.
-Brett
