Iris Agema, Mirthe de Rijke, Dagmar Pluim, Sterre Kuitert, Ruby Prinsen, group 8

Do we consider ourselves as a network individual?

We answer this question as a group. Some of us see ourselves as network individuals because they feel like they have partial membership in multiple networks. Some feel more like a permanent member of a settled group. For example in terms of social networking, one person in our group sticks more to her group of friends from before. While the other four make more new friends in the city and change more in friends. In terms of career network, we are all not actively doing this yet. Some do have side jobs, but more to earn money than career oriented. We are all not taking active part in LinkedIn. On online network four of us are very active, think of Instagram, Snapchat, BeReal, and TikTok. Average screen time of these people in 5-6 hours per day. Interaction we actually only have with our closed friends and not with all our followers.

Advantages and disadvantages:

You create communities around you based on shared background and interests, which is good for your social needs and makes you better connected to people. In addition, being part of different networks makes you more educated, informed and requires you to develop skills. Networking is good for creating job opportunities.

When you want to maintain many different networks it takes a lot of time and energy. This can cause you to not be able to contribute as actively to your networks. An inundation of posts can also make it difficult to hold your own opinion and keep track of everything.

The effects of digital divides on networked individualism:

People who do not have physical and social access to digital technology are excluded from active participation in this society in which vital information and services are available online. They cannot network to be fully connected to society. In short, digital divides cause social inequality.

We would choose Instagram as the platform to post this message. Instagram is a platform that we ourselves are very familiar with and many other students are also active on. We think the we have the greatest chance of appealing to the right audience here.

There are several benefits of being a networked individual. By having different groups of people in your social life, you meet different people from different backgrounds, expanding your knowledge of the world. Another advantage is that you are not always dependent on the same group of people, which gives you more variety in your life and you do not always do the same activities or have the same conversations.

However, there are also a few disadvantages. Having to maintain many more contacts can be tiring. You must be able to divide your attention well, if you cannot see everyone it is important to set priorities.

Another disadvantage is that many contacts are now maintained online, but this can still make you feel lonely because, for example, you are still alone in your room.

If you don’t have access to digital devices, it is way harder for you to engage in networked individualism. You can’t participate in online communities if you don’t have the access.

If it is accessible to you, but if you lack the skills needed to engage in online communication, it is harder for you to join them.

I am a networked individualist since I have daily contact with my aunt who lives in Dubai. We often have contact on diverse platforms such as WhatsApp and Facetime. Because of mobile devices and social platforms, it is easy to stay in contact with each other. Another good example is my gap year in Costa Rica I had. Costa Rica is on the other side of the world. However, since I can stay in contact with my family and friends back home, it did not feel that far away. Whenever I missed my family, I was able to call them and talk to them.

Since I am a student, my professional life mainly is about studying at the RUG. But as a student I am absolutely a networked individual. I use my phone and laptop almost all the time when studying. We have WhatsApp chats with seminar groups and we stay in contact with professors through Brightspace and email.

We decided to post our content on Facebook, since Facebook is often used by people to inform their friends of what is going on with them in a bit more formal way than other platforms. This can be used in combination with a photo, just as we did with our post. Next to this, Facebook is in our opinion the best social media platform in terms of spreading messages among bigger groups in a single time, also because you can use your entire network of friends.

Assignment 1: team 3 Jelle Faber, Kiki Koopman, Anabel Romeijn, Olle Vink and Lola Meeuwisse

Do you consider yourself as a networked individual?

Blog post by Pascal Cramers, Nynke Blankenstijn, Maartje Barmentlo, Timo Geluk and Tessa Kuipers

Hi guys,

Welcome to my first blog post of the year! I am so excited to share all my thoughts and adventures with you guys. Yesterday someone asked me if I would consider myself as a networked individual. I had some trouble answering this question as I had never really thought about this matter. So first of all I had to answer the question, what is a networked individual? Networked individuals do not have permanent membership in established groups, but have partial membership in multiple networks. They create communities around themselves and their interests, both online and through personal connections (Gnach et al., 2022).

After I knew what networked individuals were I thought about the question: Would I consider myself a networked individual? After some thought I came to the conclusion that I would consider myself a networked individual. I came to this conclusion because I have a partial membership in multiple different networks. I do not have a permanent group of people I communicate with but alternate between different networks, both online and in person. Online I alternate between networks for job offers, people to workout with and groups to share traveling stories. In person I alternate between different networks by having my network in Groningen which consists of different networks and my network at the place I grew up. Being a networked individual for me means staying in touch with professional contacts through LinkedIn for example. I am interested in my colleagues and other corporate connections. Facebook groups are also a great way to connect with people with a shared interest for traveling. I do not know them very well and do not see them everyday but we are sharing stories and helping each other from time to time. It is not a very close group but it is an addition to my network in my opinion. For personal connections I mostly use Instagram or WhatsApp to see what my friends and family are up to. While studying at the University of Groningen I also get to connect with many new people and students as well. I get to know new people everyday in class and during breaks. These situations lead me to expand my network a little bit more everyday.

There are a lot of advantages about being a networked individual, such as gaining access to new job opportunities through your network, improving your social skills and having a professional and personal network to rely on. Digital communication has improved the ability to network for more people worldwide. Networked individuals actively participate in different communities. They do not have to rely on just their family or their neighborhood, they will have a whole network of online and offline connections to fall back on.

While I was thinking about the advantages, some disadvantages came to mind as well. The idea of being a networked individual is that you have partial memberships in different networks. Online relationships often take quantity over quality, leaving you with less of a deep connection with the people you communicate with. The fact that you are in multiple networks indicates that you have to maintain all of these networks, which means you cannot enter into a deep relationship with each network. These less in-depth relationships can be a disadvantage of being a networked individual.

There is another disadvantage of the term networked individual. How accessible is it to be a networked individual? The term digital divide describes the discrepancy between those who, for technical, political, social, geographic, or economic reasons, have both access to and the capability to use information and communication technologies (ICTs), and those who do not. (Gnach et al., 2022) Because of this distinction, there are people who can be a networked individual for a lifetime, but also people who do not have the opportunity to do so. This can lead to exclusion of different groups in society.

I feel like a blog post is the perfect way to talk about this big topic. It is way more extensive than a tweet or image. I also feel like I can start a conversation with you readers about this week’s topic after I finish this blog post. I always like reading the comments on here and responding to your thoughts as well. So what do you guys think about being a networked individual? Do you consider yourself as one? Or do you not like this concept at all? Let me know in the comments and I’ll talk to you next week.

References

Gnach, A., Weber, W., Engebretsen, M., & Perrin, D. (2022).
Socially unstoppable...?!

Getting your phone from your pocket, holding it and then starting scrolling, has become a habit for almost every single one of us . Nowadays, we are still neglecting the tremendous effects that digital networks and devices have on our social life. To understand more about how digital devices affect us socially, first we need to ask you, do you consider yourself as a networked individual?

“The term networked individualism describes the new form of sociability emerging in digital societies” (Wellman, 2001, p.248). Highlighting Wellman’s concept of networked individualism, it’s basically the future of sociability. In today’s society we are not being ranked based on our hierarchy anymore. We get to choose and create a small “society” of our own, that reflects our ideologies, beliefs and thoughts. If you want to know if you are a networked individual, ask yourself the following; how much do I care about my social life? How much do I care about my social presence and activity? And I am a person who uses digital platforms to get social contact with people/organisations/ etc..

Researching networked individualism has intrigued us to go even further and interview five college students. We wanted to understand how social devices affect student’s social life differently based on their networked individualism.

Rose

In the digital age, the concept of a networked individual has transcended mere technological connectivity to become a way of life. As I reflect on my own experiences, I find myself comfortably situated within the realm of networked individuals, navigating the intricate web of connections that define our modern existence. My journey as a networked individual is characterised by active participation on various online platforms. One of the cornerstones of my digital presence is my engagement in social media. Platforms such as Facebook, have become not just avenues for sharing moments, but vibrant spaces where I connect with diverse array of individuals. Personally, I am a very social person who is really interested in writing, and recently I have published my first book. Facebook has been my asset, I share my ideas, thoughts, quotes of stuff I wrote freely. Through thoughtful posts, interactions, and the sharing of ideas, I have cultivated a digital persona that reflects my values and interests. However, I can’t just say “I am a networked individual” when knowing I am only primarily active on one social media platform and that is Facebook. I like to believe that whenever I get the chance to go to a conference or do something fun, I would jump right in. But the fact that I am not fully “digitally” active on social platforms, I can’t consider myself being a fully networked individual. I believe it’s nice being active on different social media platforms, you get a chance to create a broader community that reflects your beliefs and attitudes. Even though, personally I don’t encourage the idea of using different social media platforms, with the overuse of social media not just you will get addicted to the attention that is given to you, but you will start surrounding yourself with a toxic environment; which is the exact opposite of what your goals are. On the other hand, building and maintaining relationships are at the heart of my networked identity. Leveraging platforms like LinkedIn, I have forged professional connections that extend beyond geographical boundaries. Networking is not just a means to an end but a continuous process of learning, collaboration, and mutual growth. Adaptability to technological changes is another hallmark of my networked journey. In a world where innovation is constant, I embrace new communication tools and platforms with enthusiasm. This flexibility not only keeps me relevant but enhances my ability to connect with others who may be traversing different technological landscapes. In the end my networked individuality is not just about quantity but inclusivity. By engaging with a wide range of individuals, each with unique backgrounds and perspectives, I contribute to and benefit from a vibrant network that mirrors the richness of the global community.

Kalia

I don’t consider myself as a full networked individual as my social life doesn’t fully depend on networking. I don’t believe that I only depend on interacting through platforms but I must admit that I really like interacting in real life. Although the life we have nowadays because of social media development have changed a lot. Social media and networking life, became a huge part of our lives and personalities. Some people could not control it and could not put barriers and limits for social media in their lives, so their everyday life depends on that. My life does not depend on social media, of course I use them a lot, but they are not my priority and they did not change my physical interaction with my family or friends.

I see it as an advantage of not depending fully on social media because of what I said above, that it did not affect my relations with my family or friends. There are some advantages to being part of those networks, like communicating with friends or family that are far away from me, where I can text or see them live. This is one of the big developments that social media brought to our lives. The effects of digital divides on networked individualism are quite important because there are a lot of differences between people that are networked individuals and people that are not, as the way they are acting on their lives is a lot more different from one to another which creates a gap between those people.

Andrei

I consider myself a semi-networked individual because the people I actively get involved in online conversations with people I met in real life first. I don’t consider myself a fully networked individual due to my beliefs, meaning that despite preferring to have permanent membership in settled groups rather than a partial one, I still created a community around myself and my interests, namely my friends, and I did so through a personal connection. Because I am an international student, most of them remained in my home country, so from this perspective, I could be considered a semi-networked individual as well since the network between my friends and I have been established based on our shared background and interests, except this was made possible due to a geographical boundary. Being part of different networks has benefits, making it easier to access people from all backgrounds and facilitating access to information from all fields. However, this also implies that with too many connections, it becomes hard to create a strong individual relationship with every member, making these interactions shallow and based on curiosity or attraction. Digital divides affect networked individualism by keeping those who cannot afford to be connected or those lacking cognition access away from the rest of the online community. Furthermore, those who are already interconnected are affected by not getting access to the stories and life experiences of those previously mentioned, thus being deprived of new knowledge or ability for self-improvement.

Sebastian

I consider myself a network individual, which means that I am part of some network societies or groups where I participate as a prosumer. For example, I post videos/posts on TikTok or Instagram which share my personal emotions, thoughts, likes and dislikes. In doing so I actively participate in a community that shares my likes and needs. This community exists because of 3 reasons: I have consciously joined it, other network individuals have started following me and the Internet’s algorithm has adjusted itself and feeds me content based on my activity. Additionally, I am a network individual because I share/repost content on social media. By sharing music, memes, stories or clips I become a part of participatory culture. The advantages of different or various networks are many. Including yourself in numerous network groups allows you to expand your cultural competence and knowledge, because you interact with people on a global level. Moreover, you usually establish these various networks based on common interest and background, therefore you engage with people you can be somewhat familiar with. Lastly, being an individual of multiple networks contributes globally towards social change. Regardless of how small and “insignificant” one’s opinion or idea might be, it can have an impact on someone. The disadvantages of being part of different networks are quite impactful for an individual. Firstly, Being a part of multiple networks might have a negative impact on a person, they might get sucked in and dedicate much of their time engaging with these groups. On top of that, being in lots of networks that might share specific opinions that might differ in views might spark negative attitudes and behaviour. The effects of digital divides on network individualism can be quite serious. For example, an individual, group or society that cannot afford access to media or is not apt to use it could be/feel segregated by those that are part of networks. In addition to that, the digital divide puts a restraint on cultural, knowledge evolution because not everyone’s idea and opinion is accessible or heard. That way the network society progresses somewhat linearly without potential challenges.

The question is: do we consider ourselves networked individuals? To answer this question we first need to know what exactly a networked individual is. A networked individual is someone who forms networks with others in the digital world based on something they have in common. This might be interests such as food, sports, religion etc. Here are some examples of networks that we have taken from each group member’s daily lives: joining a WhatsApp group that shares information regarding housing availability in Groningen, forming a group chat with friends (private life) and for work (professional life), and joining a Discord server filled with strangers that have shared interests. As we were working on the assignment, we discovered that we have quite a few similar networks among us. The most prominent being Brightspace and, certainly, the university’s online programmes.

In an increasingly digitalized era, being a networked individual might benefit someone who, for instance, is looking for a job; they can join a Facebook group that broadcasts information regarding job offers which increases their opportunities to apply for one. Before the Internet had made its way to society, people had to look for a job through printed media or other analog means, or just calling companies with hope they had a vacant position. Hence, being a networked individual might ease and help several aspects of your life. However, we have also found a disadvantage to it. Being a networked individual might also carry a challenge, for instance, to evenly distribute one’s attention to all networks, as a certain network might require more attention than others. This might result in an off-balance personal or professional network.

When choosing a platform to post the result of the lab activity, we collectively agreed that Instagram would be the most suitable option since we are familiar with the platform and know how to operate it. It also allows us to include images and/or videos, which serve a multi-functional purpose.

To conclude, everyone in our group considers themselves a networked individual.

Flora Becskei S5712521

Johan Wols S5199387

Milena Jelic S5624436

Renée Tjeerdsma S5734932

Shabrina Almasih S5491819

Do you consider yourself as a networked individual? (yes)

Networked individualism is a phenomenon which replaces the old, classical model of social networks, based on hierarchy and social institutions with a model that combines local and global networks and in which geographical borders are not restricting people anymore. These networks of locally and globally connected individuals are more based on personal interests and ideas rather than on people’s backgrounds and where they were born and raised.

We consider ourselves networked individuals because, even though we are part of classical, local networks (family, neighbors, etc.), we also connect and interact with people outside of these communities mainly through social media. We follow accounts on Instagram and other media platforms that connect with our personal interests, such as arts and crafts accounts and sports accounts. We also interact with global communities through our university, since we follow courses that are available to people all over the world and have access to sources from all over the world through platforms like Smartcat.

We believe that in this generation, it is almost impossible to not be a networked individual because many everyday things take place online (e.g. online shopping, online banking, making appointments, etc.). This, however, immediately illustrates how a digital divide is formed between generations and classes of society. The term digital divide describes the distinction between those who are able to use digital devices and those who do not. In the early days of the internet, the digital divide was mainly about the distinction between those who had physical access to the internet and those who did not because of a lack of electricity, finance, or other reasons. Nowadays the digital divide has become even more than that; most people in Western welfare countries have, at least to some extent, access to devices, however, not everyone has the skill it takes to work with these (e.g. the elderly). Digital divides limit the opportunities for those who don’t have the skills or resources necessary to access virtual networks. For instance, in finding a job, housing, education - many important things nowadays require access to these virtual networks.

Another disadvantage of this networked individualism is that the global networks are not as stable as classical networks, because we are not as firmly a part of a specific network. Instead, we are more loosely connected to many different networks, and we have to make an active effort to become part of them, making it harder to rely on these networks for support.

All these digital platforms, like Instagram and X, also contribute to the rise in mental health problems among the younger generations. As our Instagram post suggests, “the grass is always greener on the other side of the phone,” meaning that everyone displays a perfect picture of their lives on these platforms causing insecurities among the people around them. Also, nowadays there is an overload of networks. We have so many networks and it can be hard to manage them all. This can cause people to neglect a network that is very important because we are so concentrated on another one.

On the other hand, it is easier to find like-minded people on the internet rather than in your local communities, as the geographical and social constraints do not apply. These people might support you in difficult times because they understand you better. You can find a sense of belonging in a network that is maybe very far away from you with people that you would never have met if it was not for the internet. Different networks show you different worlds that you may not be familiar with or are not accepted at home, but you can place yourself so easily in them. Another advantage of being a networked individual looking at a professional perspective is the fact that work is not only found in your hometown or from your parents, it is so much broader. Online there is so much work available and so many different jobs can be found. You don't have to limit yourself because online there are so many opportunities.

We chose Instagram as our platform because Wellman (2001) points out that virtual networks connect classical networks. In our experience, Instagram reflects this very well. It is a platform where these different networks come together: we follow both friends and family (classical networks), for instance, but also people who we may never have met, but have shared interests.

References:

Gnach, et al.Digital Communication and Media Linguistics: With Case Studies in Journalism, PR, and Community Communication.Cambridge University Press, 2023

Annelie Dekker, S5600235

Jette Günther, S5476909

Jikkie Veenstra, S2972263

Lies Venema, S3957144

Indy Kogelman, S5170451

We chose an Instagram post due to Instagrams ability to connect with multiple social groups at once. Instagram enables a convenient and widespread engaging with both new and existing networks. Given that our generation, the younger demographic, is more actively present on Instagram, we aim to connect and target them, prioritizing this platform over others favored by older individuals.

Iris Agema S5756081

Mirthe De Rijke S5734649

Sterre Kuitert S4367928

Ruby Prinsen

Dagmar Pluim S5749328

Media History of our Families

After World War II there was a rise of information and digital communication technologies that led to a new technological paradigm that showed the transition from an industrial age to an Information age (Gnach et al., 2023, p. 39). In this information age, which was a prerequisite of the digital society, there was a growing importance of knowledge, information, and communication in a globalized world. The weightless economy appeared, a postindustrial economy that relies on information technology and telecommunications to produce a high-value output of exchangeable information, knowledge or services (Gnach et al., 2023, p. 39). That the weightless economy changed the economic system can be seen in the music industry. Record labels manufactured only small numbers of vinyl records or CDs back in the days. Now we have more streaming services like Spotify. These days we can provide products and services to a lot of people across vast distances for relatively low costs, leading to more profit (Gnach et al., 2023, p. 39). Thus, now we have faster communication over large distances.

In this essay we will address how the use of media has changed with regard to the past. Which media did our grandparents use? How did they use them in everyday life and which social or cultural role did these media play? Do these media still exist or have they been replaced by others? How has media consumption changed? Do the youngest members use different tools than we use? In addition, we will write down the strengths and risks of the media used.

In the time of our parents, media was utilized to a lesser extent. They used for example printed media such as newspapers or books (Gnach et al., 2023, p.13). During that era, the utilization of other old media such as telephone, television, or radio was limited to a specific location. Hence, its role was diminished and primarily served as a source of entertainment. Additionally, the ability to connect with individuals worldwide was not feasible, resulting in challenges in maintaining social relationships. Consequently, social circles often remained confined to a particular locality. To still have the ability to communicate, people used to use letters that they could send all over the world like this. In this way, people could still communicate with each other, but this would take some time, often several weeks.

It used to be more difficult and took much longer to contact other countries. Cultures hardly came into contact with each other as a result, and "multi-cultural" was not a big concept before.

Nowadays this is different, you can connect with someone on the other side of the world in a matter of seconds by sending an app or calling someone, even people far outside your normal social circles (whether you actually get a response is still a question...).

Most of these media platforms still exist, but have changed a lot. For example, almost everyone has a cell phone nowadays, so you can be reached all day long and in the past this was different, back then you could only be reached when you were at home by the landline phone. The home phone is gradually going away, many older people still have a landline phone in their home, but with younger families it is increasingly being replaced. The newspaper is still often used, but you find that most people are reading the news online. Most older people still read a physical newspaper.

Media use has increased tremendously. These days we use mass media in the public sphere. Many people today are accessible throughout the day and use multiple social media platforms. The youngest people today are already using other media and platforms. There is a lot of gaming by very young people these days. And while people used to do that on a gameboy, now the Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Playstation are especially popular. Even in the area of social media there are changes in the last few years, where Instagram and Facebook used to be the most popular, it is now BeReal and Tiktok what people do most. On these apps content can be liked, commented and shared on, and links and hashtags can be posted. Also, what the older generation didn’t have back in the days was WhatsApp and Snapchat which are to frequently exchange updates with closely related people (Gnach et al., 2023, p. 53). Also streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, Videoland, NPO and Spotify are used widely and frequently. Another thing the older generation didn’t have was YouTube, podcasts, apps to order your food and apps to shop online.

Strengths of social media today are that people's social circles are much larger, making things like finding a job or buying a house easier because people have many contacts. You can communicate as easily with your neighbors as with someone who lives on the other side of the world. Social media these days can promote a sense of community and collective identity among groups and even creates opportunities for the creation of social movements around the world (Gnach et al., 2023, p. 47).

The risk is that people are very easily manipulated by the things they see online (e.g., misinformation) (Gnach et al., 2023, p. 49, 56), people can present themselves differently and people's personal information can be spread very easily. These are also immediately the challenges that social media brings. Furthermore, a danger is that social media can widen the digital divide (Gnach et al., 2023, p. 47). Finally, the distinction between private and professional life is more vague now (Gnach et al., 2023, p. 51).

With the evolution of technology in the modern age, media has gained a significant influence over society. This influence is observed in how media has shaped how humans communicate, share and consume information/content.

The term media relates to the means of mass communication which humans use and interact with daily. Due to its widespread presence and high development, the list of media that society engages with is overly long. But these mediums can be divided into four major categories: print media, broadcast media, internet media, and out-of-home media. Print media consists of printed mediums, for example, newspapers or magazines. Broadcast media relates to channels of communication such as TV or radio. Internet media is content such as emails, posts, and videos transmitted online through platforms like social media or online websites. Out-of-home media are mediums like billboards that interact with people outside of their houses.

As stated previously, society interacts with all these types of media daily, directly and indirectly. Moreover, social groups interact with specific types of media more than with others because of differences like age. Different generations use different media due to the availability they had to it while growing up or due to their ability and affordability to use it. Following this paragraph, we will present the timeline of media use throughout different generations.

Back in the 1950s, times were different, and media opportunities were scarce, radio being the most common means of getting information besides newspapers. Paper media was generally consumed during breakfast or breaks from work, to get informed about society-relevant topics. Meanwhile, radio could be consumed throughout the day for leisure purposes, such as listening to music, or hearing plays or other radio shows. Newspapers played an immense social role because, in those days, they were owned by independent entities, meaning that every printed publication had to follow the agenda and views of the owner. That led to an easy divide amongst the population, making it easy to identify one’s political views depending on the paper they were reading. The social role of the radio was just as important, if not even more important, due to its widespread use during WW2. The social role that both these media played was of equal importance, and it helped broaden the people’s knowledge and taste in music and theatre in the case of the radio since people did not have to pay money to go and see every show or concert. Meanwhile, the newspapers were crucial in bringing awareness over critical issues, from slavery and discrimination to helping rally support in times of war.

Both of these forms of media are still present and are just as relevant, the only change being how they are consumed. Nowadays, radio is part of every car, with more channels to choose from than ever. Due to this fact, radio is rarely consumed outside of commutes, so people use other means/apps such as SoundCloud or Spotify during the rest of the time. Although newspapers are still present in paper form, most people consume news via online newsletters. In this sense, the media our grandparents used is still just as relevant, and due to this, instead of being replaced, it has only evolved into a different shape over time.

Media consumption over the last decades has rapidly changed due to rapid advancements in digital technology. In contrast to the past, when the variety of available media was limited to television, radio, and print media, today's media are highly personalized and interactive, thanks to the internet and the innovation of smartphones. This ongoing digital transformation has effectively bridged the gap between generations, as an increasing number of elderly and older adults are now familiar with social media and other digital devices. Undoubtedly, this significant change in the use of media is supported also by the fact that social media platforms play different roles in people's lives apart from communication. For instance, LinkedIn provides a platform for professional networking, while YouTube offers educational opportunities to its users. However, this increased media use provokes new problems, such as managing the increasing flow of information, overusing social media, and handling the digital divide that leaves some social groups behind. This dramatic shift in media consumption shows how new technology and societal changes are closely connected. In other words, the change in media usage during the recent decades reshapes our daily lives and affects, to a great extent, our social behaviour and interpersonal relationships.

Ever since the media became such a big part of everyone’s lives, all of us became familiar with them. This means that whatever new tool comes out, everyone would be able to use and deal with it, even not so young people. So, whatever new platform and tool gets invented and the younger people start using it, the older people will also be familiar with using those types of tools.

Media Histories of Our Families

During the last century, media consumption has changed drastically. The main types of media our grandparents used were newspapers, radio, and television. We, on the other hand, have access to phones and computers, which allow us to browse the Internet for almost anything we can think of; news, entertainment, information, etc.
Newspapers, radio, and television were the sources through which our grandparents learned about what was happening in the world. It was also where they would become familiar with different opinions on these matters. These media helped shape their opinions and worldview. Also, radio and television were sources of entertainment, and in that way, played a cultural role as well, as these media both shaped and reflected what people enjoyed. As owning a television was not that common, it would bring people together in one house in the street.
Other social activities (e.g. looking for a job or looking for a contractor to repaint your house) would be done via newspaper advertisements or even just through conversations between friends and family.

These media still exist in their traditional formats, such as print newspapers and scheduled television. However, they are used less, especially by younger generations. There are also many alternatives, many of them digital – traditional newspapers, in addition to print versions, also have digital versions. Television programmes can be viewed on demand via the channel’s website. In addition to these digital versions of traditional media, there are also news websites that are only available online, such as nu.nl. And instead of watching television, many people in younger generations use online streaming services such as Netflix. Also, there is now the option to keep up with the news on social media, whether it be through official accounts of established news sources such as newspapers or press agencies, or via individuals such as journalists or even celebrities.
Media is increasingly consumed through digital means (see above). Also, media consumption has become much more diverse. Whereas our grandparents would purchase one particular newspaper, for instance, we now have easy access to articles from many different newspapers and other sources, so we have access to much more varied information than our grandparents. Also, we can practically get updates on events in real time, at whatever moment we choose. Media can be consumed wherever you want, whenever you want and in whatever way you want. In our grandparents’ time, news updates were much less frequent, and the moment at which they became available was dependent on media companies.

On the other end of the spectrum are our younger generations (younger brothers and sisters, or cousins). The children in this generation receive their first phone at a much younger age compared to many of us and have access to a wide variety of digital devices, like gaming consoles, phones, iPads, and TVs.
We also noticed that younger individuals tend to use apps differently than we do; Snapchat is used like we use Instagram in the way that they get a lot of their news from this app.

If we compare our current situation with the situation our grandparents were in, we can see that a lot has changed for the better; everything has become easier and faster, and it is now possible to transcend geographical boundaries. It is, for example, much easier to stay up to date on what is happening around the world and when you have a question you can just “google-it”. Also, communicating with friends and families can now be instantly done through media like WhatsApp, Messenger, or even just E-mail. The message does not have to travel from one point to another anymore, so even people across the world from each other can text each other without having to wait for their message to arrive.
This is very different from how our grandparents, and even parents, used to interact with media. It costs money to send letters and thus it costs money to contact friends and family. There was also the risk of letters getting lost in the mail, especially with longer distances. Interacting with media in general took a lot of time; sending letters or certain news appearing in newspapers. Everything took way more time than it does now.
People were also way more isolated because by only reading one particular newspaper, the variety of information our grandparents got was relatively limited compared to the myriad of information available on social media. Also, new information becomes available much less often than it does on social media.
When new forms of media did come out (TV, cell phones, etc.), which sped up the process of communication, not everyone had the means to access these new media, creating a digital divide.

However, not everything has changed for the better. The content of the newspapers was subject to regulations meant to ensure the quality of the information, so people were indeed more isolated, the information they did receive was of good quality and trustworthy. On the other hand, social media information is not regulated as strictly: anyone can create content, regardless of their credentials and the truthfulness of the claims they make. Thus, there is the risk of consuming misinformation. And although there are attempts to intervene in the spread of misinformation, as mentioned by Gnach et al. (2023, pp. 49-50), they also note that the right approach has not yet been found.
In addition to this, due to the algorithms used in social media, filter bubbles can be created, which means the diversity in standpoints that users see can become limited. As social media companies track their users’ behaviour, the content users see is tailored to their own viewpoints. This is not the case for traditional media such as newspapers and television, they cannot tailor to individuals and mostly go with the public opinion. However, this came with the risk that people in certain networks only got to see the public opinion from their own network, and not see the bigger picture. Everything they read and heard about came from a source of their own network and it was, therefore, hard for people to make up their own minds and learn all the truths about the world.
There are also risks when it comes to using social media. The main one being addiction to social media, which has negative effects on people’s social lives and mental health. When too much media is consumed, people can get out of touch with reality and might have difficulties differentiating between what is reality and what is not. Media can also be overwhelming; there is pressure to respond quickly to texts and emails, you see a lot of negative things on the internet, and you see a lot of things in general (lots of stimuli).

References:

Gnach, et al. Digital Communication and Media Linguistics: With Case Studies in Journalism, PR, and Community Communication. Cambridge University Press, 2023.

We also worked our way through our own generation. The strengths, challenges, and risks associated with them were also taken into account. The outcome of the discussion has made us realize how significantly different things were and how they have changed. However, we have come to find that new media are just ‘a continuous interplay with older media’ (Gnach et al., 2022, p. 12) and that we can still find old media in a more technologically developed form. For example, old media such as radio can still be found almost everywhere, but now just in a different form. Instead of the old, traditional radio where they take up the form of a physical portable device, it can now be found in applications on smartphones or embedded into cars’ interior.

Talking about the transition from old media to new media, we also discussed it from other perspectives; furtherly considering other aspects of the digital or information age, such as network society, weightless economy, and surveillance capitalism. Young adults and children of our families are active members in a network society, since we were raised around the digital or information age and therefore results in us being most familiar with digital devices and their UI/UX designs.

We benefit from being a part of a network society by utilizing the social and media networks, such as using LinkedIn to look for a job. A young family member – a young adult – from one of the group’s members has benefited from the weightless economy by writing an ebook and selling it on online shopping platforms where you can upload the products you would like to sell, such as Amazon.

Expanding our discussion for online shopping platforms or social network sites is when surveillance capitalism played its role: it is ‘where companies … collect data on our online behaviors (e.g., likes, searches, shares, purchases) in order to use them for commercial purposes – like targeted information and marketing, or the development of products and services’ (Gnach et al., 2022, p. 40).

"Focusing on the meaning-making potential of specific semiotic modes in the manner just suggested is a relatively straightforward way of defining readily recognisable forms in diverse medial configurations that learners can identify and then go on to use in critical arguments concerning just what messages a media offering is carrying and why. Such forms can also then be more critically and self-reflectively addressed during production. But an essential precondition for this to succeed is that the meanings attributed to distinct forms are, in fact, appropriate. This constitutes both a theoretical and a practical challenge. The use made of codeployed and interlinked modalities in diverse medial configurations continues at an ever increasing pace, and so questions must be raised concerning the extent and precise conditions under which diverse modalities productively support one another. This in turn demands that the individual contributions of any modalities also be accurately established so that the learner, analyst or producer is not led to false or unhelpful misgeneralisations" (Bateman, 2021).

The passage of the article is relevant, because it focuses on the potential challenges that come with using semiotic modes. Potential problems could concern the appropriate attribution of meaning to specific forms. Moreover, the paragraph states the importance of understanding how different modes support each other, while it is important to grasp the function for each mode, in order to avoid false conclusions or generalizations.

Example: In an advertisement, which is about an expensive and fast car, including the slogan "With this car, drive faster than ever before!", which should convey the message of the excitement of driving a nice car. However, it could be misinterpreted, and assumed that driving such a car will allow them to drive recklessly and at high speeds. This would be an inappropriate attribution of meaning.

We think that this paragraph is particularly important, as it shows the potential problems arising when attributing inappropriate meanings to semiotic modes. In everyday life there are many situations where one encounters such multimodal illustrations, which is why it is important to question the ways things are being portrayed and what connections between the different modes are made. It is especially important for those people seeing the representations, but also for those people creating them, since misunderstandings could be avoided. The example we provided represents the issue discussed, while highlighting the potential issues that go along with misinterpreting an attributed meaning to a mode. We chose an advertisement, as it is something we encounter very often in everyday life. Advertisements do not always provide context to the message, therefore allowing for misinterpretations to occur more often. The receiver has no prior context of what the advertisement is about, and may therefore interpret the message in a subjective way that does not match the intended message. There is also no follow-up information provided on the advertisement, so the viewer only has their subjective opinion in mind.

Sophie Jung (S5595541), Nathalie Larrman (S5561701), Xenia Wiedemann (S5534135), Marielle Artzt (S5636450) and Lina Möller-Bertram (S5589967)

Tessa kuipers, Nynke Blankenstein, Pascal Cramers, Timo Geluk, Maartje Barmentlo

Being the Head of Communication in an International Company, Leading Editor in a News Portal or Head of an NGO

Dear Team,

Today I want to share with you the more important aspects of communication in digital environments, which are relevant for our NGO. First of all, digital communication within our organization is all about teamwork. We need each other and should take advantage of everyone’s variety of skills to combine for the best possible digital communication. We must combine the traditional skills like working under pressure, checking facts, etc. with newer skills like working with social media or content creation for digital platforms. Aside from teamwork, everyone in the team should have a digital mindset. This entails thinking creatively and outside the box within the scope of digital communication. It is important to be mentally flexible in the fast changing digital world. For our NGO specifically, it is important to know how to use our digital platforms in order to maintain the best possible relationship with our audience. We are an NGO which is reliant on our relationships with clients to support what we do. It is thus also of essence to interact with our audience on a deeper level to gain the best possible understanding of their needs. And a more practical point, we should have a constant communicative presence on multiple media channels to get our message across well to our audience, the more interaction the more awareness we have for our organization!

It is important to pay attention to the media linguistic mindset. According to Gnach et al. (2022) it is important to comprehend the context of the text you’re writing. This is, among other things, about ‘implementing the product’. Ask yourself the question ‘How do I tease and promote my piece on social media?’ For example, you have written a new article, which is a brochure about help in Africa, we have to make sure everyone gets to see the article. Visibility and effectiveness of the article you write is really important if we want to reach our goal.

Furthermore, I want to ask you to pay attention to ‘controlling’ the structure. How do you improve the interplay across media? There has been a development in professional writing. In the past, a writer wrote his piece in silence and communication with the outside world started from the moment of publication. Nowadays, if a writer wants his piece to be known and received by the public, the writer must ensure that there is a constant communication process across all media channels. (Gnach et al., 2022) This is something I want you to work on as well. If we look again at the example of the piece about Africa, the writer should ensure that brand awareness of the project being written about is created on various media channels, such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

I hope this refresher of our most important features of our communication was useful. I hope to see you all apply them.

Kind regards,

Head of NGO

Reference

Gnach, A., Weber, W., Engebretsen, M., & Perrin, D. We expect that our team is able to understand how certain texts can come across to others. We believe that having clear writing helps to prevent these uncomfortable scenarios.

Dear Team,

Since digital communication is really upcoming, it is important to understand how to use this effectively for our company. This memo is written to explain the key characteristics of writing and communicating in digital environments, so that everyone can do their job as well as possible.

Looking at the activity fields outlined in "Digital Communication and Media Linguistics" by Gnach et al (2023), here are key aspects we find crucial for our team in creating content and writing texts.

Key practices for writing and producing a text for our company are that the text needs to be clear in advertising what our product is. Also, another key part of writing a text is that you, as the author of the text, need to know how the message of your text can be interpreted. It is important to write as clearly as possible so that our message comes across to the reader as best as possible. We don’t want to create any stupid misunderstandings. Another thing that we want from our team is that the text is written for the right audience we want to reach, so that the right people see our texts and we can successfully sell our products.

We also think that our team requires the ability to work together as a team correctly. It is important to make agreements on what each individual does for the text and that each individual does their job neatly and on time. This is important for our team because when writing an advertisement or something else as a team we all are responsible for the end product and making it a success. The last aspect in working together is making sure everyone adheres to the style of our company, everything we produce needs to be in line with each other and it all needs to fit within our brand style.

We believe if we work on these points together, we’ll be able to achieve great success. Without these rules we fear making a bad name for ourselves. For example, we need to make sure that we understand that our brand is known all over the world. Therefore we also need to understand differences of viewpoints between cultures. We need to think about our audience and our message in this case. We might make offenses towards certain groups of people, if we don’t . These sort of scenarios can be prevented easily with these ground rules.

Let's all do our best to implement these things as well as possible, so that we can all help make the company run successfully. Without these rules, we fear that our company

Best regards,

Head of Communication

We are using Chat GTP 4.0

Theme: recommendation systems for e-commerce

Nathalie Vondrackova, Pepijn Koel, Amelie Brown, Jitze Kienstra, Floris Bokx

Our first prompt was: “what can you tell me about recommendation systems for e-commerce? use approximately 200 words.”

The output was:

“Recommendation systems for e-commerce are advanced algorithms designed to suggest products to users based on various factors, including their browsing history, purchase behavior, preferences, and interactions on the platform. These systems utilize different methods to personalize the shopping experience, aiming to increase user engagement, improve customer satisfaction, and boost sales.

There are three primary types of recommendation systems: collaborative filtering, content-based filtering, and hybrid approaches. Collaborative filtering recommends products by finding patterns and similarities among users and their interactions. For instance, if User A and User B bought similar items, the system might recommend products bought by User A to User B and vice versa. Content-based filtering, on the other hand, suggests items based on the features of the products and the preferences shown by the user. It analyzes item descriptions and user interactions to make recommendations that closely match the user's interests. Hybrid approaches combine both methods to leverage their strengths and mitigate their weaknesses, providing more accurate and relevant recommendations.

E-commerce platforms continuously refine their recommendation systems using machine learning and AI to better understand user preferences and adapt to their changing behaviors. This allows for a more personalized shopping experience, leading to higher conversion rates and customer loyalty.”

Although we did like the level of quality of the answer, it was a bit too abstract, especially for people who aren’t that familiar with the topic. So we decided to change the prompt slightly to include two examples of recommendation systems, specifically, the ones from the lecture slides. So our second prompt was:

Second Prompt: “what can you tell me about recommendation systems for e-commerce? use approximately 200 words. you should use the example of Netflix's "because you watched" or amazon's “people also bought” “

The output for our second prompt was as follows:

“Recommendation systems in e-commerce play a crucial role in personalizing the shopping experience, guiding customers towards products they are likely to purchase. These systems analyze a vast array of data, including browsing history, purchase behavior, and item characteristics, to suggest items that meet the user's preferences and needs. By doing so, they enhance customer satisfaction, increase sales, and improve the efficiency of the shopping process.

A prime example of such a system in action is Amazon's "people also bought" feature. This feature is based on collaborative filtering, an algorithm that predicts a user's preferences by compiling and analyzing the behaviors and preferences of similar users. When a customer views or purchases a product, Amazon's system suggests additional items that other customers have bought alongside it. This not only aids in product discovery but also encourages additional purchases by highlighting items that complement what the user is already interested in.

The success of Amazon's recommendation system illustrates the power of leveraging customer data to create a more engaging and personalized shopping experience. This approach is not unique to Amazon; many e-commerce platforms utilize similar systems to drive sales and foster customer loyalty. However, Amazon's implementation serves as a benchmark in the industry, showcasing how data-driven strategies can effectively enhance the online retail environment.”

We liked this product explanation a lot, but we decided to slightly change the output ourselves, by talking about some of the ethical aspects of recommendation systems, since we think that is also an important aspect to take into consideration.

Our final answer is:

“Recommendation systems in e-commerce play a crucial role in personalizing the shopping experience, guiding customers towards products they are likely to purchase. These systems analyze a vast array of data, including browsing history, purchase behavior, and item characteristics, to suggest items that meet the user's preferences and needs. By doing so, they enhance customer satisfaction, increase sales, and improve the efficiency of the shopping process.

A prime example of such a system in action is Amazon's "people also bought" feature. When a customer views or purchases a product, Amazon's system suggests additional items that other customers have bought alongside it. This not only aids in product discovery but also encourages additional purchases by highlighting items that complement what the user is already interested in.

However, recommender systems in e-commerce raise ethical considerations around privacy, as they often rely on extensive data collection about users' behaviors and preferences, sometimes without consent of the user. This has been an ethical debate ever since recommendation systems have arisen.”

Finally, we made an audio file using ai. For this we used elevenlabs. We didn't have to use a prompt for this. The audio file was of good quality so we didn't make any changes.
