Preparing students to be effective peer supporters by EUN Partnership aisbl

In order to effectively train peer supporters, we must first establish the specific goal(s) of our peer support program. For instance, in the below scenario, we aim to equip peer support students with crucial knowledge and skills including active listening, communication, and conflict resolution. You are working in a secondary school and the goal is (a) to let the younger ones feel that they are not alone, (b) create a safe learning environment and (c) prevent bullying. Share practical ideas for activities to use in your training that effectively prepare students to become skilled and effective peer supporters and ‘like’ at least two other ideas shared that you favor.

My idea is to begin with the peer mentoring program aimed primarily at improving student achievement by creating a safe learning environment. The first step would be to survey students in order to collect data on who is interested in being a mentor and supporting others in learning, and who are the students who would be happy to accept that support, i.e. who are interested mentees. With all interested students (both mentors and mentees), I would organize workshops where they could get to know each other and where I would explain to them peer mentoring process. At those workshops, we would also discuss the topic of assertive communication and effective methods of learning and teaching. I would arrange appointments, e.g. on a weekly basis, in which I would hold meetings where mentors and mentees would express doubts and obstacles they encounter during mentoring. Based on that, I would make a further plan on the topics that need to be discussed in the workshops that I would organize during the entire peer mentoring process.
