It is without a doubt that to accomplish any task or to achieve a goal people need to form and work in a team. Team is a group of individuals working together to achieve a common pre-defined goals. During the second semester of Foundation in Business program in Taylor’s University, students are required to form teams to accomplish their assignments. The participation of the students took two main forms, virtual and face-to-face.

To begin with, the virtual team is defined as the team whose members are separated by physical distance but are united by a shared goal. Generally, it consist of talent across geographies and time zones. The interactions among the members of a virtual team are mediated online by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools like Skype,Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp. On the other hand, face to face teams consist of a group which operate in physical proximity like meetings and discussions. So what is the best way to highlight the differences between these two forms?

In fact, there are a common situations and steps which any team have to go through to success in their tasks. Surely, the differences between the virtual and the face-to-face teams will be highlighted and explained in a better manner if it is explained step by step.

First of all, the importance of setting and determining the team Structure. In a virtual teams, structure and hierarchies is critically important to deliver results in a fast and accurate manner. That is because if the virtual communications if there is no leader and a clear stated responsibility the overall performance of the team will face a massive negative effects. But in the case of the normal face to face team, it usually more fixable in that process as the physical interaction play an effective role in handling conflicts and exchanging information.

Secondly, the Decision-making process. In case of virtual teams, members had a very limited or no informal access to the updates. Hence there is a need for more frequent sharing of the data to provide all the information to the team updated. Considering the time zone differences as one member were abroad, it becomes difficult to schedule meetings. Thus in case of virtual teams many a times delay occurs in fixing a problem or reaching a consensus. Whereas when the team member form a meeting, a quick decisions and problem solving as the information is being exchanged easily.

Finally, the Relationship Building process. Unquestionably, when the members participate in a face to face activities and discussions, they tend to develop close social ties with each other. They strike rapport with each other when they interact face-to-face. However, in the virtual team the interactions are tend to be more task-focused. Further, lack of verbal cues and gestures in virtual setting does not allow any scope for personal touch in the communication.

List the traits of good team players.

Involves others in the decision-making process - A good team players often give others the chance of being involved in the decision making process so that ideas can be shared and there are no conflicts in between the team members after a certain decision was made. Example, during my teams' visit to the Museum Negara all three of our team members were involved in the decision-making process on which assignments should we concentrate during the trip and which one of us should be assigned on which task to concentrate on.

Respects and is tolerant of individual differences - One should always tolerate and respect different characteristics and not make fun or disrespect them. In our Group Assignment discussion, we had several difficulties with one of our team members' accent which made it difficult in our discussion. However we did respect our team member and not offend him . Hence,we tried to adapt to his accent and ask questions if we do not understand him.

Understand and is committed to the team's objective. - A good team player is always aware of the team's objectives and give his 100% commitment to achieve the objective together with his work teams. In our group assignment team all three of our teams members were clear about objectives that was to complete our group assignments properly, on time, not to do last minute works and lastly to score a minimum of 80% from our 50 marks allocated for the assignments.

Trusts, supports, and has genuine concern for other team members - It is important that there's trust, support and concern among the members in a team to achieve their given objectives. Trust, support and concern is a must as it will boost the confidence of the members in a team because they know they have a team that trust, supports and is concern about them. In our team, every team member are assigned a task to complete in the given group assignments. This is because each team members know that they have the trust, support and concern of the other team member to complete the assignments.

How we implement?

·For example, all members involve in test and brainstorming, open debates and cross team discussion before and after going to Museum Negara.

·We also implemented the participative leadership model of Dale Carnegie Training in our group discussions where rather than pushing our team members to meet deadlines and objectives, our leader is created environments that influence others to achieve group goals through
delegation of task and equal participation.

Laissez-faire

Incorporated by other teams that we observed where leaders are hands- off and allow group members to make decisions. For example, leaders of other groups have provide freedom for their members to get their Qualitative Analysis questionnaire to be filled by museum visitors using whatever method but the task has to be completed. Through our observation, some groups collected data through written methods while others through verbal communication. In some groups, this leadership style worked perfectly because their members were highly skilled, motivated, and capable of working on their own while others faced problems because their members lack the knowledge of communicating with visitors especially foreigners. Thus, the leaders in groups that are not performing well should take a more hands of approach. Eventually, as followers acquire more expertise, leaders might then switch back to a more delegative approach that gives group members more freedom to work independently.

4. Propose the suitable types of work teams in the related working environment.

During the museum visit, many teams were collaborating and operating to achieve their sets of goals. It is a fact that there are different types of work teams and each one is ideal for some specific situation, so which is the most suitable type of work team on the museum.

To be able to answer this question, it is important to identify the working environment which the team was facing in the museum during our visit. In my point of view, the university students were facing a collaborative and task-oriented working environment as they had a task of collecting an information for their studies. In the case of that environment, the most suitable types of work teams is the self-managed work team. That is due to many advantage which this type have. Those advantages include the fact that in this work team, all members are equally involved in work-related decisions and processes led to both the development of the team and the task achievement. Moreover, the self-managed work team operates and holding responsibility without a manager (formal manager with a real authority) as they practice self-management and every member is self-motivated. That
considered an important advantage as it is hard to determine a manager in the case of students. Furthermore, all the members have to help in planning and scheduling work, assigning tasks, controlling the pace of work, and taking action on problems. That develop the skills of all the members and help in forming friendly connections between them.
