They used mascara to protect their eyes from the evil spirits and bad energy. Many of the era like Babylonians, Romans, and Greeks were using kohl as well. Brushes evolved in different shapes and styles. The comparison of the mascara usage from then and now; in the modern day, people used the mascara as their cosmetic for everyday use. I learned in the module one, make up was used extensively to exaggerate the face, including white lipsticks and false eye lashes.

The first women to have worn make up would be the Ancient Egyptians; eyes were coated with eyeliner made from kohl, eyeshadow were blue and green, lips were coloured either red, orange, blue-black and magenta and hair were often braided in those days. Ancient Greeks would wear a subtle eyeshadow on their eyes, and brows were glued on with animal hair to achieve a natural unibrow. India’s Gupta age would wear eyeliner with kohl, hair was decorated with fresh flowers and lip rouge were popular for the lip colour. In these days, Bindi is for married Hindu women. Women of the Elizabethan era would make their skin paler with powder, lip rouge also was in fashion for lip colour, and eyebrows were shaved to make the forehead larger. Japanese Geisha would heavy foundation, and “w” shape of clear of skin would appear on the nape which creates the illusion of a mask (Geisha, 2017). Geisha were trained to paint their lips into red in the shape of budding flower. Eyes should line in charcoal with red on the outside. Pre-French Revolution would wear rouge to make their cheeks red. Shiny lips were popular for their lips to make it greasy looks. Some women would paint fake veins and beauty marks themselves to emphasized paleness. Victorian Era thought that clear skin was key to Victorian beauty. They would pinch their cheeks to make it reddish. Swinging sixties would wear paler pink colour, false lashes and contoured and large bouffant wigs in those days. I learned in the module one that women’s look of today is more Kim Kardashian looks because people started not satisfied and contented with their own body and looks because many of us want to achieve a perfect look, and body image. Back in the days, women  beauty standards were natural and have not done any surgery. I also learned in module three, some women would spend a lot of cosmetics because they care how they look. Makeup is still keeping going in the days. It is still the same how women use makeup throughout history.

Eyeliner was made of kohl, combined with galena, which is made from water, oil and other mineral like fats of animals. Eyeliner became popular in fashion industry. Based on the picture, there are so many different of usage of eyeliner then and now. Many of the make up artists demonstrated different approaches to express features and achieve the look you want by shaping the line underneath of their top lashes or inside of the lower line lashes (Ettachfini, 2018). Eyeliner was worn very thinly before but now, some women wear it heavier. Eyes, lips, and brows are the main area where women tend to focus on. Not all celebrities wear foundation and or consider cosmetics for everyday use. Nowadays, foundations, powder, and highlight are the main thing in the make up industry now. However, women still wear smokey eyes in these days.

From 1990, women would tend to wax or pluck to suit their faces. It is either short or thin. Between 2000-2010s, fully grown out eyebrows were popular in those days. Women would use pencil brows to shape their eyebrows (Eyebrows Throughout History, 2016).

Cleopatra also used to crush bugs to give a red color on her lips (Lipsticks, 2019). The first lipsticks was released in 1884. It was made from pigments, castor oil, and beeswax. Since then, lipsticks have become popular. Lipstick evolved into different lip products such as lip stain, lip tinted, lip matte, lip sheer, lip balm, lip gloss, and lip pencil (NYC, 2015). I learned in the module one, that even though the world was fighting a war in 1940’s, women used to wear make up especially lipstick and that continued till now. Castor oil was also used in many war tools and arms. Even though lipstick evolved into different lip products, it is still the same ingredient they use and purposes.

As I learned in the module one, in 1940 lipstick was used continually after the war for everyday use. Lipsticks can change and help achieve the desired looks of whoever wears it.

Later on, make up technology advanced and improved, making new frosted lipstick a lot better. They have three shades available such as berries, bronzes, and warmers shades such as brown and black. Some celebrities use two different shades, one on their top lashes and one on their bottom lashes. All of these cosmetic products came back and became popular. We learned that in the module three, if cosmetic did not available to everyday use for women in the 20th century, makeup would be still available in the future.
