Worms are one of the most well known decomposers. They are important because they break up debris which makes it easier for other organisms in the compost food web to digest them. They also create pathways which help with aeration (allowing oxygen into the material) which is needed because oxygen is what makes the food waste helpful instead of harmful.

In outdoor composting, vermicomposting (composting with worms) is much more doable because most people do not want all those creatures in their home. It is also important to poke holes in this compost as well.
