Cultural Iceberg

Shallow characteristics of culture: courtesy, concept of time, eye contact, body language, and facial expressions. All five of these characteristics apply to me daily and are important because without these characteristics I wouldn't be the person I am today. I use these characteristics on a daily basis to manage my time and interact with others by being polite. These characteristics play a huge part of my actions in every day life, especially when I am interacting with others.
Deep characteristics of culture: tolerance of physical pain, concept of self, and concept of past and future. These three characteristics apply to me daily because I know how to tolerate my physical pain, how I view myself, and what the past and future means to me. You have to have a positive image of your self to be happy and being able to tolerate pain shows how strong of a person you are. Knowing what the past and future means shows what goals you have for your future and that you don't look back at your past.
"Wouldn't you be silent if you were treated like dumb, dirty Indians every day?" I selected this quote because it describes my characteristic of self concept and the boy who said this doesn't have a good concept of himself since he called himself dumb and dirty. "It was through such struggle over social and political issues that I developed substantive relationships with my African American classmates-relationships that I do not think could have developed in my other, more Eurocentric classes that were either populated predominantly by white kids or simply did not create the space to really engage students of color." I chose this quote because it fits in with the characteristic body language because the students got to talk to their classmates.

Indianapolis Public Schools: Gifted and talented enrollment was 2,228. SAT/ACT enrollment was 650. In school suspensions was 2,183.
Evansville Vanderburgh: Gifted and talented enrollment was 1,921. SAT/ACT enrollment was 1, 282. In school suspensions was 2, 864.
Three similarities both districts had was that they both had a high amount of in school suspensions, there were a lot of students that were enrolled in the gifted and talented and a lot of students were enrolled in both districts.
Three differences would be that Indianapolis Public Schools had less students enrolled in SAT/ACT. Another difference would be that Evansville Vanderburgh had less students enrolled in the gifted and talented. The last difference would be that Evansville Vanderburgh had more in school suspensions then Indianapolis Public Schools did.
I think that the SAT/ACT enrollment for both schools will increase in the future because there will be more students who want to go to college. I also think that the in school suspensions will decrease because many parents these days are making sure their children are behaving in school. Lastly I think that the gifted/talented enrollment will stay the same or slightly increase because there is still children who have these needs that will need to be met.
"In any case, no single test is sufficiently valid, reliable, or meaningful that it can be treated as a marker for academic success."
"How about across historical eras: would anyone seriously argue that our criteria for “well-educated” today are exactly the same as those used a century ago – or that they should be?"
"What Does It Mean to Be Well-Educated?

2a. My gender identity, gender expression, and biological sex would be that I am a woman. I am sexually attracted to men and romantically attracted to men.

2b. I know someone who has a different gender expression then myself and they are a guy. He wears makeup and sometimes dresses more feminine. Their biological sex is a man and their gender identity is unknown. Who they are sexually attracted and romantically attracted to is unknown.

2c. Three questions I have about gender expression would be, when do people start realizing what they want their gender expression to be? Do a lot of people interchange their gender expression on a daily basis? Why do some people decide to dress more feminine some days and then other days’ dress more masculine?

3. Porosoff (2015) stated, ‘I jumped in: “Caroline, it sounds like you’re saying that the word ‘bromance’ reveals a culture conflict between gender identity and gender expression. In what we call a bromance, two guys are very close friends.”

Porosoff (2015) stated, “Remember we’re talking about gender expression, not sexual orientation. We don’t see Puck having a love life of his own, so we don’t know if he’s gay, straight, or somewhere in between. But we did say he’s somewhere in between masculine and feminine. Why?”

Everyone matters even if we look at things differently.
I think that sexuality and sexual orientation is a huge deal, especially when it comes to people getting based off of their sexuality. Everyone matters because we are all humans and every individual is unique because of who they are. Someone shouldn’t be judged off who they love or want to be with. Our present generation judges too quickly when it comes to things like this and it is sad to know that there will always one person who wants to hurt someone else. I think our society needs to accept others for who they are and support those who are “different” from the normality.

I would always give them the full ability to use those services and always make sure that they were succeeding with the services.
4) In Navigating the Course an idea I liked said, "Good communication is essential to the ongoing success of this partnership." (p. 11).
In A Guide to the Individualized Education Program an idea I liked said, "To create an effective IEP, parents, teachers, other school staff—and often the student—must come together to look closely at the student’s unique needs."
I like these two ideas and they connect between my other two answers because good communication is the key to a child's success. All teachers and administrators must come together and look at the student's unique needs in order for that child to be successful.
