Refugees struggle to balance food expenses with everyday living necessities and are often sending their money home to loved ones. Those who struggle with basic English struggle with gaining employment. Most employers look for people with proficient English skills in order to work (Refugee Council Of Australia). Many refugees are on temporary visas, making employers less likely to hire them (Coalition). Many refugees are unable to afford qualifications, hence making work harder to find in Australia.

Country focus: Mozambique is one of the poorest countries located in East Africa. Mozambique is in extreme poverty. Mozambique has 1,028,743 internally displaced people and over 2 million in need of humanitarian assistance (crisisresponse.iom.int, n.d.).

With reference to health concerns listed on the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, three important health concerns present in people arriving from Mozambique are tuberculosis, malaria and HIV.

Tuberculosis:

Infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes tuberculosis, a type of bacterial infection. Tuberculosis is an airborne disease and can be transmitted via coughing, sneezing and bodily fluids from surrounding people. Symptoms include fever, coughing, fatigue, night sweats and unexplained weight loss (CDC). Approximately 12,400 people die from Tuberculosis in Mozambique each year. (“CDC in Mozambique | Global Health | CDC”).

One treatment available for tuberculosis is taking antibiotics typically for at least six months. Doctors will monitor and determine how long a patient is required to take medication (Mayo Clinic).

Malaria:

Malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium and is transmitted via infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria can be fatal, so it is crucial to get on top of it as quickly as possible. Symptoms include fever, chills, headaches, muscle and abdominal pain, confusion or nausea.

An available treatment for Malaria involves different types of medications depending on the type of malaria. Medications include chloroquine, primaquine and artemisinin based combination therapy medicines (World Health Organisation).

HIV:

Human immunodeficiency virus is a virus that attacks the immune system.

For me, the most relevant aspect of competency standard 12.1 was the potential impact my own values and beliefs could have on my interaction in healthcare settings. I have learnt I need to approach patients with an open mind and put my own bias aside. It is vital I learn about different cultures as this will enable me to communicate appropriately. I have improved my understanding of upholding patient autonomy and ensuring they know they’re able to make their own decisions. I strive to enable my patients to feel comfortable enough to discuss their own cultural concerns with me by participating in open communication. In order for me to apply this in a healthcare setting, I am committed to expand my learning of different cultures by researching resources to assist. These skills are essential to providing ethical patient centred care and aim to reduce cultural disparities (Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership).

Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership. Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds COMPETENCY STANDARDS FRAMEWORK for CLINICIANS. 2019.
