Project-based learning can allow students to demonstrate his or her capabilities while working on project as groups. Below is attached an article that an English teacher wrote based on Project- Based Learning. In the article Veronica Buckler says, "When planning projects for the students, it’s really about engaging them in today’s world." To include project based learning in my class I want my students to be challenged in their thinking to be able to form their own opinions and ideas.

Problem based learning and inquiry based learning are alike in that students apply their knowledge to research, investigate, and solve a problem. In an English class involving a novel that has a problem then having students create a padlet to help them brainstorm how to solve that problem within the novel. Attached is a file that goes further in depth on how effective Problem-Based Learning is within a classroom.

Cooperative learning is an instructional format in which students have to work together in small groups to master the skills lesson. The jigsaw model would be a good way to get students to cooperate and work together. Students will be split up into a different groups to complete worksheets. After the students complete the worksheet they will meet back to share their findings with other classmates.

Elaborating on Service Based Learning

(Above is a rubric)

(1) "Why:" Explain why you will do this assessment/activity (Why are you doing this particular assessment? How will it help students explore and express their identities? How will it benefit them and you? Use vocabulary/concepts from the unit in your response.)

I chose to elaborate on the assessment Service Based Learning. Service Based Learning is to help students apply what they are learning to real-life problems. In an English class this is perfect for me to choose novels that relate to this. Such as To Kill a Mockingbird and racism plays a huge role in that novel. Students can relate to that in a sense of how far the world has come and to learn more about their ancestors. I am doing this assessment to allow students to express how they feel towards that topic. As well as if they have personal experiences that relate to some characters in the novel. Students will be able to explore their identities by having the opportunity to see where they stand and to see what kind of opinions, they form that reflect who they are.

(2) "What:" Explain what you will do for this assessment and how you will implement it. This is where you'll tell ME (not your students) the logistical details: Will the projects be completed at home (beware of bias) or at school? Will students be working in groups or alone? If in groups, how will those groups be assigned? How much time will be allotted each day or in total to work on this? Etc.

This project will be completed within the unit. Readings will obviously be mostly outside of the classroom but on occasion students will have time to read in class. Students will be primarily working alone but at times they will have time to collaborate within the classroom. Hopefully an allotted time frame would be at least an hour a day to complete a couple chapters of the novel. Discussions will be within class that will allow students to discuss in groups or even discuss as a class. Within groups they will be assigned to have new people each time so that the discussions can vary and new opinions will be heard.

(3) "How:" Explain how you will review and use the results of this assessment to improve your instruction, the class environment, assignments, etc. How will you use the information students provide?

To use the information that students provide I will create an assignment of students creating their own padlet. With their padlet they will be allowed to brainstorm on the novel. Starting with a huge part of the novel, which is the problem that is faced within it. They will then go further to discuss if this problem is still an issue in today’s world as well as how they truly feel about this struggle.
