Elie wiesel finds his kabbalah teacher

Elie Wiesel went on his own in finding a master of kabbalah "for (himself) in the person of Moishe the Beadle"(Wiesel 4).

Around the point of the quote elie wiesel and the rest of the citizens of Sighet are still living their normal lives in Sighet. Where Elie Wiesel and Moishe the beadle spoke for hours about Kabbalah's revelations and mysteries. Knowing little about the war that was going on while they lived their peaceful lives in Sightet.

This quote suggests that Elie Wiesel is not like other kids where he is interested in studies and religion. This is important because it strengthens his religious faith and give him a better understanding of god.The quote also highlights the fact that Elie Wiesel is able to do things without other people's help which will help him in the concentration camp. This is important because when he's in the concentration camp relying on others is a weakness because if they learn he has a connection to someone they will exploit that fact and make his life miserable.

tip write about how the quote shows how he is able to do things on his own and his religious faith/thirst for knowledge.

The chaos in the cattle car

"Our nerves had reached a breaking point. Our very skin was aching. It was as though madness had infected all of us. We gave up"(Wiesel 26)

Around the time of this quote there are 80 people in the cattle car with Elie wiesel and his family who don't know where they are going, but have only been told they are being moved away from their homes because it is too close to the "war front". As the days went past they became hungry and went mad/insane.

This quote shows that Elie Wiesel struggle with faith and patience. This is important because it is a moment that made him feel hopeless and abandoned by the government and tested his religious faith. Furthermore this quote is the first time his religious faith is truly tested. This is important because once he is at the concentration camp each day his faith will be tested and will make him question religious faith as well as his very existence.

The first Night in Auschwitz

"NEVER SHALL I FORGET that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed"(Wiesel 34).

As the people of Sighet arrived in Auschwitz they cannot believe what is happening in the concentration camps. Once they were inside of the camp they were stripped of all human rights and identity being forced to strip and put on new clothes as well as getting their heads shaved. Adjusting to their new live each day feeling happy to be alive.

This event shows that Eliezer has realized that this is the rest of his life and there is no escape. The acceptance of his new life made it easier to survive because he does not resist what the kapo or Nazi request or do only worrying about his individual survival. Furthermore this quote reveals the significance of the first night and how much it changed him from helping others to now only worrying about his individual survival. This is important because the concentration camp will use Eliezer and extort him for worreing about others.

Eliezer Wiesel witness the hanging of a child

"The child, too light, was still breathing... And so he remained for more than half an hour, lingering between life and death, writhing before our eyes. And we were forced to look at him at close range. He was still alive when I passed him" (Wiesel 65).

This is one of the many hangings Eliezer witnessed at Buna in concentration camp, this time three prisoners who went against the Nazi among them a pipel who was beloved by all.

This event shows that Eliezer and everyone else in the camp are more worried about their own survival than others to the point they would not put him out of his misery and just watched as he withered away. This is important because he has changed from helping others to just watching them die to survive in the hellish world he lives in. Furthermore the event is significant because it shows him the consequences that comes by helping others and what the Nazis would do if he stood against them.

Eliezer Rebels Against God

"Blessed be God's name? Why, but why would I bless Him? every fiber in me rebelled. Because He caused thousands of children to burn in his mass graves? Because He kept six crematoria working day and night, including Sabbath and the Holy Days? Because in His great might, He had created Auschwitz, Birkenau, Buna, and so many other factories of death? How could I say to Him: Blessed be Thou, Almighty, Master of the Universe, who chose us among all nations to be tortured day and night, to watch as our fathers, our mothers, our brothers end up in the furnaces?"(Wiesel 67).

Thousands of men came to pray in solemn on the last day of the year to Bless the Almighty, but Eliezer has a realization that caused him to rebel.

This event is significant because Eliezer has been devoutly religious dedicating his time to learning kabbalah in the hope of becoming closer to God and understanding the universe and his purpose, but now he feels god has abandoned everyone who praises his name in their time of need. Furthermore this realization reveals that Eliezer is losing faith in God and hope of a better life. This is important because Eliezer faith in God was one of his reasons for living, but caused him to follow obligation like fasting which would have hindered his survival.

"To no longer feel anything, neither fatigue nor cold, nothing. To break rank, to let myself slide to the side of the r o a d . . . My father's presence was the only thing that stopped me"(Wiesel 86).

Eliezer and the rest of the prisoner are forced to run in the snow for 42 miles to make it to a different concentration camp where the red army will not find them and if they stop running even for a second the SS officers will shoot them with no hesitation.

At this moment, Eliezer realizes his only reason for living is his father. This is important because Eliezer's father is one of the reasons he rebelled against God which was one of his reasons for living, but now that he no longer believes in God he lost hope of a better life. Furthermore this event is important because it pushed Eliezer to become closer and more reliant on his father, because of this when the time comes for Eliezer to leave his father he will not be as reliant on himself.

Suddenly, the evidence overwhelmed me: there was no longer any reason to live, any reason to fight"(Wiesel 98-99).

Eliezer and 99 others including his father were crammed into a cattle car fleeing the red army where Eliezer found his reason for living.

This event is significant because Eliezer's father has been with him from the start and now that his father may be dead he realizes he has no reason to live.

"During the alert, I had followed the mob, not taking care of him. I knew he was running out of strength, close to death, and yet I had abandoned him. I went to look for him. Yet at the same time a thought crept into my mind:If only I didn't find him! If only I were relieved of this responsibility, I could use all my strength to fight for my own survival"(Wiesel 106).

During an alert Eliezer followed a mob abandoning his father who he has been with since the start of the holocaust, but just like Rabbi Eliahu's son he abandoned his father.

This even shows Eliezer is now instinctively abandoning his father for his own survival because he does not see any use in helping him anymore. This is important because Eliezer and his father have been helping each other since the start of the holocaust, but now that his father has grown weak he instinctively left him for his own survival even though Eliezer only reason for living is his father. This event highlights Eliezer's development from someone who would not leave his fathers side no matter what to now abandoning him in the cold because of his weakness.

Eliezer Realizes He Has No Reason To Live

"I shall not describe my life during that period. It no longer mattered. Since my father's death, nothing mattered to me anymore"(Wiesel 113).

Eliezer stays in the concentration camp until April 11 but does not describe his life during that period after his father's death.

This moment shows that Eliezer only reason for living up till now is father after rebelling against God. This is important because after his father's death Eliezer is now a completely different person losing everything that made his him who he was from the start of the story. This is important because Eliezer life will never be the same even after he is liberated due to him losing his mother, father, sisters and his faith in God.
