What does it mean to be released?
Release means death. When you get released they inject you with something that kills you and they throw your corpse away.

When/where does the story take place?
It is uncertain exactly where it takes place but we know its set very far into the future.

Why do they live in a place with so many rules?
We don’t know who made the community or why but they have many rules to be able to control the people. Which is why one of the themes in Blind Obedience.

Who is in charge and making all these rules and decisions?
The committee of Elders are able to change rules and make decisions for the community.

Why are there other communities and why do they visit each other?

Why is the community more focused on kids getting jobs rather than kids enjoying life and their youth?
We never get an exact answer but we can assume that the kids not really having a childhood is part of the dehumanization in the community and that they need to have their assignments to keep the community perfect.

Even when talking to Asher he felt some hesitation and uncertainty as he chatted with his friend. We learned more about the last time they had selected a Receiver. One Eleven girl had been chosen but we don’t know what happened. All we know is that they are not allowed to say her name or use it for a newborn and that she had disappeared. His folder was unusual, the other Twelves had thick folders. Meanwhile, his was almost empty with only one sheet of paper. He took a look at his folder to see all of his instructions, there were 8.  There were instructions on where and when to go for his training which was pretty normal. But there were other odd rules and instructions written down. For example, he was allowed to be rude and ask any questions and get answers. He also could not discuss his training process with anyone, he was not allowed to share his dreams and not use any medication related to injuries from his training. He was also not permitted to apply for a release and he could lie. We also learn that the man must transmit all the memories of the entire world to Jonas, and that the memories have weighted him. He tried comparing it to going downhill on a sled in the snow, but Jonas did not know what snow was, or a sled, or the term “downhill”. He told Jonas to lie down on the bed and take off his tunic. Then the man turned off the speaker which Jonas didn't know was even possible.   • The community is very structured because there are so many rules. It does not allow people to think for themselves at all. For example, there are even rules about when you can have stuffed animals. 
  • The result of having so many rules is that the community members follow them without question. They are not in control of their own lives or actions.
  • The rules are used to control the community. They get in trouble for minor offences, like parking a bike in the wrong place.
  • An example of the control the rules have over people is when Jonas dad kills the second twin because that is the rule. He does not question whether or not this is the right thing to do.
