Police brutality is a persistant conflict that occurs in several countries, and should be resolved as soon as possible. The overall theme of this padlet is to give statistics that show the biased opinions of police officers, and persuade more people to speak out peacefully against this conflict. If we speak out more and give justice to those police officers who have committed crimes of their own, without being violent, we are one step closer towards equal rights for all

undefined

We, as a people, have endured many hardships that hindered our ability to see each other as equals. It is these hardships that have sprouted such tyranny in our social construct that has allowed events like the recent rash of police violence against civilians to pervade. While they are charged with the responsibility to serve and protect, unlike the military, they often operate autonomously and allow for their personal bias to color their view and change the way they may address certain situations often times allowing their corrupt views in dealing with situations involving race, religion or politics. But Is this a surprise for a vociferous society that mindlessly worship individual rights over the common good of a civil society?

I acknowledge that the police system is rife with corruption, and that each new member they bring in is exposed to their original ways of thinking. A study from a professor at a university in California shows; “evidence of a significant bias in the killing of unarmed black Americans relative to unarmed white Americans, is that the probability of being black, unarmed, and shot by police is about 3.49 times the probability of being white, unarmed, and shot by police.” They bring their personal bias and racism into each situation and that is wrong. There is one thing that I feel is really important though. I am trying to reach out to the people who think that every cop in the whole country is corrupt. I feel that it is necessary to defend those few that are actually doing their job, and aren’t racist, or aren’t biased.

I think that it is important that when we as a people speak out and voice our opinions, that we give justice to those who have done wrong and only those people. By blaming the whole police force we are setting ourselves up for controversy which can lead to more conflict. In our society, something is only true if we provide facts and evidence, and when we falsely convict the whole police force as people who are racists, it brings a lot of unwanted attention and more controversy. The point of this mini essay, in other words, is to try and get more people to speak out against police brutality in a manner that doesnt target every police officer, but still shows how much we are willing to fight for equality. It is important that we understand that violence isn't the correct answer and we have to speak peacefully. Only then can we truly accomplish what we want, which is equality for everyone no matter what skin color, race, nationality, or religion.

Police brutality is the action of a police officer abusing his or her power to purposefully attack civilians that are believe in a different religion, have a different skin color, or are a different nationality. It takes place worldwide as there have been several cases from New York with Eric Garner, Ferguson with Michael Brown, Chicago with Laquan Mcdonald, to the 43 missing students in Mexico and students in Canada. But there is more to police brutality then we think. As well as the abuse of many civilians in general, especially here in the United States we see that police brutality is mostly aimed toward people of color, a different religion, or nationality. According to a study from a professor at a university in California the, “evidence of a significant bias in the killing of unarmed black Americans relative to unarmed white Americans, is that the probability of being black, unarmed, and shot by police is about 3.49 times the probability of being white, unarmed, and shot by police.” The Washington Post also ran through as many numbers and shootings as possible and found on average, black men and women were killed three times as much as whites or other minorities. The Washington Post also found that black men, who are 6% of the total population, were 40% of the people who were shot, unarmed, in 2015. At the end of the year, 98% of the officers, almost all white, were not found guilty after they shot someone down. According to copcrisis.com, there are only "17,000 law enforcement agencies who track misconduct reports. The Department of Justice generated a report on police misconduct in the United States in 2001, and the report was based on statistics that were voluntarily given by 5% of the police departments in the United States. All though the data is incomplete, there were 4861 reports from DUI's to theft, 6613 cops were involved, and 6826 victims. According to police officers own words, 43% say "Always following the rules is not compatible with getting the job done." 52% say "It is not unusual for a police officer to turn a blind eye to improper conduct of other officers." 61% claim that they "Do not always report serious abuse by fellow officers." and 84% claim that they have "Witnessed fellow officers using more force than necessary." People claim that there are no statistics for police brutality, and won’t believe anything unless they hear facts. Brittany Packnett, someone who is part of Barack Obama’s task force for 21st Century Policing claims, “And yet we know that people are continuing to suffer in these ways every single day, so we have to make sure we have the numbers to back up people's stories and that those numbers push police departments towards urgent action.” Police brutality is more than just the police being violent towards citizens. It also involves a lot of racial bias and that is the thing we have to fix and speak out about. The more we can educate people and give them facts, the more we speak out, the quicker we can overcome this barrier.
