There are two music videos for this song. The first video is the official music video that shows interaction between two partners. The actions between the couple, gives the song a whole new meaning. To many, if they just watch the official music video and listen to the lyrics, they would assume the song was about a break up and the ups and downs in a relationship or the "waves". The second video was an idea that Dean had after playing the song "Waves" live at a few concerts. He wanted to capture the intimacy, vulnerability, and emotion that playing the song with just a piano gave off ("Dean Lewis Chats..."). He came up with the idea to do a live, stripped back version of "Waves" in one take.

You can hear the agony and pain in Deans voice while he tries to save the feeling of excitement. But without the background knowledge of what Dean was experiencing at this time, you would not associate the lyrics with losing childhood excitement. You would inference that the artist was struggling, but not knowing in what particular way.

In the song "Waves", by Dean Lewis, he portrays the idea that as you grow older, the excitement of childhood disappears. Dean uses pathos, ethos, and logos as he hides his feelings, character, and experiences throughout the song. He uses these strategies to convince himself that he needs to find the excitement that his younger, past self once felt.

Dean continuously uses a metaphor referring to life as a "storm" or "flood". He also refers to the excitement as the "waves" that come and go. When doing this, Dean is using pathos to appeal to the emotions of the audience.
- There is a swelling storm
And I'm caught up in the middle of it all
- It comes and goes in waves
- We watch as our young hearts fade into the flood into the flood

As I said before, this song is sort of a realization point for Dean. There are many spots throughout the song where he accepts what is starting to happen in life. Therefore, Dean lets some of his character show through. Many of these particular lines in the song, come across very emotion and heart felt.
- There is a light in the dark
And i feel it warmth
In my hands
In my heart
Why can I hold on?
- The freedom, falling
The feeling i thought was set in stone
It slips through
My fingers
And I'm trying hard to let go
- I've watched my wild youth disappear in front of my eyes
Moments of magic and wonder
It seems so hard to find
