Denouement for "The Cask of Amontillad

Montresor had all finished but the last stone when Fortunato began hysterically laughing and murmuring about the amontillado. In response, Montresor laughed about the wine with him. Fortunato, however, stopped replying. Impatient, Montresor called out his name several times, only to be replied with silence. Without an answer, he thrust a torch into the hole where the last brick would be and let it fall. There was a jingling of bells. Montresor felt his heart grow sick- which he blamed on the dampness of the catacombs. He plastered the last brick and made a rampart of bones.

"My heart grew sick-on account of the dampness of the catacombs." (Pg. 217)

- This quote resembles Montresor's guilt for killing Fortunato. He had called out Fortunato's name multiple times, but every time there was no response. He is finally feeling guilt for what he has done to Fortunato.

Symbolism

The last brick that Montresor struggles to put into the catacomb because of its weight is symbolic. It is symbolic in the way that the brick's weight is weighing him down, the weight could represent guilt, regret or sorrow. This shows that Montresor is not heartless, but in fact rather lonely.
