Her sense of reality within the performance is severed from its own past. As she begins a sentence she is faced with the immediate history of what she has just spoken which in turn affects what she is trying to say. Kraust describes this history as her ‘text’. Throughout the video we see Holt losing her intent with her language as she becomes lost finally saying that “I am surrounded by me”.In Rosalind Kraust’s writings ‘the Aesthetics of Narcissism’ Kraust argues that the“The response of the performer is to a continually renewed image of himself. This image, supplanting the consciousness of anything prior to it, becomes the unchanging text of the performer.” The text (subject) of the performer is their response to their changing image. This question of the position of the artist as subject is also a reconsideration into the present reality. The artist is faced with an immediate history and their actions in the present are trapped by an inescapable loop. Feedback loops therefore are constantly responding to the present through the showing of the immediate past which in turn affects the future. The isolation of the present is key within a feedback loop. because the subject matter within video is largely the body and with the very nature of video not being a tangible object, the subject matter becomes narcissistic.
