Scientifically based reading instruction involves rigoros, systematic, and objective procedures.

Phonological Awareness is awareness of the larger and smaller parts of spoken language. Phonics teaches the relationship between letters and sounds and how to use these relationships.

I really struggled to read in elementary school but my identical twin sister had no problems. I think learning that even though we have the same DNA, knowing how our brains function is helpful in knowing that not everyone learns the same and as teachers we get to learn how to help each student learn the best they can.

Phonemic is individual sounds phonological is chunks of sound. Rhyme is phonological because you are looking at the whole chunk of the spoken language rather than if you were to drop and add the first sound in the rhyming words. this would be phonemic.

Site words are words that each individual person has stored in their brain that they can just recgonize based off site alone. Without having to work it out. As students get older their site word capacity increases.

Temporary and Permanent Irregular Words

Temporary irregular words are words that don't seem right until another set of letters or sounds is taught. For example FOR might be irregular until the sound OR is taught.

Permanent Irregular words are word that the spelling just doesn't match the sound. For example Said makes a short e sound but is spelled with AI.

A highly Irregular word would be OF. It is a permanent Irregular word because it sounds like it should be spelled uv. and that never changes by any patterns that we learn, it is just irregular all the time because two letters make sounds they typically shouldn't.

High Frequency words don't always have to be irregular words. The words Of and That are both high frequenct but only of is irregular.

Site words are words that you as an individual have committed to memory. Not everyones site words will be the same.

Irregular words and high frequency words will look different for every learner. The words you know, use, and see often are not the same as each of your students. Those words will also change as they get older and their vocabulary expands.

Syllable Types

Closed Syllables- Are syllables that contain one vowel (short Vowel Sound) sound and end in at least one or more consonants. Most Common Type.
Open Syllables- Contain a Long vowel sound and ends in a vowel.
VCE Syllables. Vowel Consonant end in E. Magic E, Silent E, Sneaky E.. 1 Vowel followed by a consonant followed by an E. The E is silent, the First Vowel says the long Vowel sound.
Vowel Team Syllables- Contain two or more letters that represent or short vowels, variant vowels or diphthongs (Vowel Digraphs.) Ends with a vowel sound. or a consonant.
R Controlled Syllables- When a vowel is followed by r, the letter affects the sound of the vowel. The Bossy R.
Consonant + LE syllables When the LE appears at the end of a word and is preceeded by a consonant +LE form the findle syllable.

Some multisyllabic words could be broken at different places and their syllable type might be a couple different options. Within this you have to decide where to break it and what type it is based on how you pronounce the word when you are speaking. Do you emphasize this letter or is just there? Do you break the word into this many pieces or combine them into fewer syllables. There will right and wrong answers most of the time but there are a few times that it just depends on where you are and how you pronounce things.
