CAPS is a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary partnership between MFT, MCC, Big Life, Family Action and Home Start. We are a City-Wide team comprising of Group leaders, Clinical Psychologists, Specialist Parent Infant Mental-Health Health Visitors, Child & Adolescent Psychotherapists and Midwives, Assistant Psychologists and Administrators. Our groups are delivered by a range of professionals from the team and may involve collaborations with Outreach Workers.

Parents - The Children And Parents' Service (CAPS)

Your CAPS Team

CAPS offer psychological support with both parents in pregnancy and parents of children under 5 years.

The aim of CAPS is to support parents and carers to help their children to develop to their fullest potential. This includes promoting improved quality of parent/child relationships; and supporting parents and carers with their children’s emotional and behavioural difficulties, and to promote their school readiness. We suggest, in the first instance, to approach your health visitors for support.

CAPS can help when you may be worried about:-

• bonding with your unborn baby or infant following a difficult labour, postnatal depression or anxiety; or because you have had difficult childhood experiences yourselves; or struggling with your relationship with your older child

• understanding what your baby is trying to tell you; how best to soothe your baby and how to help them feel secure

• managing your child’s behaviour and support you to help them manage their feelings and/or developmental differences

• your child’s feeding, sleeping or toileting (once you've had support from your health visitor)

• your child seeming very anxious or worried, particularly when separating from you.

These workshops are for Manchester residents ONLY

Toilet training workshop: A 1-hour online workshop which considers the particular challenges parents/carers can face when toilet training a child with social communication differences. The workshop will be focused on children who are right at the start of toilet training, but you are welcome to attend if your child has started toilet training and you are experiencing some difficulties.

Eating challenges workshop: A 1 ½ hour online workshop for parents/carers of children with social communication differences who eat a limited range of foods (there does not need to be any concern about their weight). The workshop looks at the reasons behind a limited diet, nutritional needs, the impact of sensory differences and ideas to try and increase the range of foods your child will try.

 Parent carer sensory workshop: A 3-hour online workshop.

The workshop is for parents and carers of children and young people from pre-school years, up to 18yrs of age.

This workshop is led by a Specialist Occupational Therapist and will provide the opportunity to:

·         Develop your understanding of sensory systems. E.g., Touch, smell, taste, movement and introduce less familiar systems such as proprioception and interception.

·         Consider how neurodivergent individuals may experience sensory differences.

·         Think about how sensory differences can affect everyday activities.

·         Explore strategies that may be considered when supporting a neurodivergent individual.

Play workshop: A 2-hour online workshop co-delivered with Manchester - SEND, EARLY DEVELOPMENT INCLUSION TEAM (SEDIT - formally RHOSEY). This workshop shares practical ideas you can try at home to support sensory regulation for children with social communication differences. It aims to improve parental and child wellbeing through play. We will explore ways to develop shared interests and joint attention so you can enjoy ‘play’ together.

You can join them for one of the following online sessions exploring the government’s new SEND proposals and feeding back directly into the consultation. The sessions will explore the key proposals, break down the consultation, and give families the opportunity to share experiences, discuss concerns, and have your voices heard.
