Definitely expect to become more comfortable with writing by seeing that there are many ways you can do so. There’s not too many assignments, so really try on the ones you have. Good luck! Don’t be afraid to participate in class. There are good discussions.

Expect to come out of the course with a new appreciation for writing and rhetorical elements. I personally never thought I would ever come to like rhetorical concepts, but this class changed that narrative. Great class, remember to involve yourself in the class both inside and outside of the classroom.

Expect a lot of open discussion and be prepared to make thoughtful contributions to these discussions. Participation is very important! I enjoyed my time in this course. It is easy to be successful as long as you complete all assignments to your best ability. I have learned how to be a better active class member during my time in this class. Thinking, interpreting, and contributing thoughtfully to every discussion will result in much success in this course!

my advice to you is to go into this course with an open mind. this is a class where you get out of it what you put into it, so come prepared and enjoy participating in the class discussions. there’s so much more to writing intentionally then you might expect, so absorb what you can and you will come out a better writer!

Rhetoric

Before taking this course I only knew the basic definition of rhetoric. Throughout the course I was able to deepen my understanding or the many different aspects of rhetoric as well as the importance.

Learn to read like a writer

You should expect your writing to actually improve. ENGL 102 with Dr. Rule was the English class where my writing improved most and you really get to learn to read like a writer. This makes reading much more interesting. Take the readings very seriously and try to use reading like a writer as a tactic to understand! Have a great semester!!

Something I learned in this course

After taking this course, one thing I feel like I gained from this class and that I will use in my future writing is crafting a piece for the specific audience you have in mind so you know it is received well. Between the texts we read and the WTC project, I have learned that when you create a text, you need to keep the audience in mind. It is important to write for your intended audience and include whatever strategies you need to ensure it reaches this audience. Even though this may mean the text won’t work for everyone, if it is written well enough, the text will have an impact on the audience it matters most to, so your message will be sent and your text will be received appropriately.

This course is a lot better than I expected it would be, especially coming from english 101, and is much different from a typical english class (in a good way). Don't be afraid to share your ideas and connect with your classmates. Have a great semester and you'll do great!

This english course is unlike any other course I’ve take. Instead of learning to improve surface level writing mechanics, you get to pull back the curtain and see the underlying concepts and methods that influence the process of writing. This course definitely made me a stronger writer and gave me a wider scope of understanding into the purpose of writing and argumentation. Have a great semester 102H of 2025!

I encourage you to pay attention to this class! This class is exciting and super informative! You will learn so much about writing, reading, rhetoric, and research from an interesting angle you may have never seen it from! I learned so much in this class that I will use forever, to succeed in this class is to gain knowledge from it and grow as a writer and reader! Engage in the out of class readings those are key and use the techniques you learn in them!

This course will have a good bit of writing assignments. You should always put your best effort into them because your effort is what is most important. Also, it will help to annotate the reading assignments. This will make it easier to discuss them next class, as well as act as daily practice for future annotating assignments.

Don’t take yourself too seriously! This is a very discussion based class, be willing to participate in conversations. Also, the texts assigned are usually interesting, so set aside time to read and digest them.

My advice would be to trust the process in this course - annotating for the first time, taking apart the many aspects of rhetoric, may seem daunting at first. However, Dr. Rule will equip you with strategies to succeed, and you will soon look back on your growth in this course and realize how far you’ve come. This course is great for first-year students, so don’t be intimidated - you will learn so much and come out on the other side more mature and ready to tackle anything college throws your way!
