Practiced all over the world. This is mainly an African tribe practice as an alternative to ink. This is also seen as a sign of bravery, loyalty, and as a passage to manhood.
Also practiced in Papua, New Guinea. The process can last weeks and the process uses a razor blade, so that when the wounds heal, they resemble an alligator marks. They believe that the alligator eats the boy out of the man.
In South Sudan, the Dinka (a nomadic tribe), will use scarification as facial markings. Girls and boys are encouraged to not wince or cry as its a sign of courage. Girls are marked for beauty as boys are marked to resemble manhood.

Still seen massively around the world. Ear stretching was a way to ward of evil, a right of passage, as well as, beauty. Some tribes still do this practice today like the masai tribe of Kenya and Huaorani tribe in the amazons.
The masai tribes elders had more spaced apart ears to that of the younger of tribes. Because of this, it is suggested that ears are stretched out more meant more wisdom.

In India, the Apatani women spaced their noses with noses plugs as a way to make themselves look undesirable. This helped prevent men from other villages from attacking and raping the women. This practice has stopped occurring in the 1970's where the younger generation of women refused to get the nose plugs.

Archaeological evidence has shown that labrets have been invented no fewer than six times, in Sudan and Ethiopia (8700 BC), Mesoamerica (1500 BC), and Coastal Ecuador (500 BC). This practice isn't as commonly practiced, but still occurs in some African tribes today with some tribes wearing the disc on the upper lip or even both lips. The size of the disc is seen as social and economical standing. Other tribes have those that simply wish for the disc to be bigger.

Practiced by the Maori people of New Zealand. This practice involves permeant markings of the face and body. This was done using chisels instead of puncturing, causing rough bumps instead of smooth skin. Aside from resembling status and rank, these tattoos were also a way to attract the opposite sex.
Men generally received moko on their faces, buttocks and thighs. Women usually wore moko on their lips and chins. Other parts of the body known to have moko include women's foreheads, buttocks, thighs, necks and backs and men's backs, stomachs, and calves.
