It had so much to teach each person, and each person will learn a different lesson that spoke to them. Mine was the loss of family. The way Sam's mom reacted compared to his fathers reaction, it shows that there is more to it than just walking out. Family is a bond that allows people to love one another, and when you loose a member of your family that belonged to you, and that was apart of your life and in your heart, it damages a piece of you, big, or small. War is the worst conflict man has ever created. Sam's mother I feel was more calm about the situation because she never really had first hand experience, she just heard, and she probably thought he was doing right, which is what Sam thought. His father on the other hand, had been in war, and didn't want to loose his boy. What spoke to me was the fact, that even though Tim had lost his brother and his father, he never lost hope. He never gave up, and never stopped. He proceeded to take care of his mom, and in this book, that is what Tim had to go through to grow up, to become and fulfill that 'man' part of him. It made him stronger, and taught him more responsibility, and what it's like to rise above and take over for the better. His faith gave me a new mind set for those types of situations.

The war was difficult for many people. Thousands went hungry, including soldiers, and many families were torn apart. Food was scarce, and supplies were expensive and difficult to acquire. Many children were orphaned, mothers lost husbands, and parents lost children. Prison ships were full, and disease ran rampant, with little means to stop it. Crimes went unchecked, and the government sank into debt. The war was a harsh time for all involved, and Britain and America soon tired of it. It was costly, distant, and some deemed it an unworthy cause. Punishments in the ranks were brutal, sometimes to the
 point of cruelty, and discipline was strict. However, some soldiers still were desperate enough to steal, and many families, even those who needed what assets they had, lost them for "the sake of the war".
