Operant Conditioning - Behaviors have consequences
  • Positive Reinforcement - The addition (reward) of something in response to a behavior
  • Negative Reinforcement - The subtraction of something bad (an annoyance) to improve the situation
  • Positive Punishment - Punishment that adds something (spanking with a belt)
  • Negative Punishment - Punishment that takes away something (Losing priviliges)

  • Studied the power that reward or consequence had on one's behavior
  • Skinner Box: A small enclosure in which there was a response to be made (a bar, button, or lever)
  • Discrimination: If an animal is only rewarded when a seperate stimulus is present than the animal will associate the reward with that stimilus
  • Fixed Ratio: Every nth response is reinforced
  • Fixed Interval: A reinforcement every set time period
  • Variable Interval: In this case, a reinforcement is made available at variable intervals following a reinforcement
  • Results show that behaviorism is mainly concerned with observable behavior, as Skinner never stated that the rat learned to press the lever for food, just that he did
  • Not Ethical: starved the animals he worked with
