Ruth wants to care for her family however she can. This is proven when Mama says "A women will do anything for her family" (Hansberry 1.2). This quote shows how Ruth is so determined to keep her family running. They may not be the happiest or have the most money, but they are alive. They are not living the worst lives. Ruth wants to do everything in her power to help her family live the best lives they can.

Ruth is like the glue that is holding her family together. "Now . . . you taking it all too seriously. You just got strong-willed children and it takes a strong woman like you to keep 'em in hand" (Hansberry 1.1). She has to make Mama, the head of the family, feel better after her children are being stubborn.

Ruth's appearance shows a lot about her past. "We can see that she was a pretty girl, even exceptionally so, but now it is apparent life has that been little that she expected, and disappointment has already begun to hang in her face" (Hansberry 1.1). This quote tells us that Ruth was once very beautiful, but throughout her life she has just been disappointed.

Though we don't see much of Ruth being self-conscious, she is. "RUTH: Yes— I think so, too. (She goes to the mirror and starts to clutch at her hair.)" (Hansberry 1.2). After seeing Beneatha's hair, she begins to feel differently about her own. She seems slightly insecure about her own look.

Gray

I associate the color gray with Ruth. At some moments, she is very pessimistic and negative. “You better get up from there, man! It's after seven thirty, I tell you.” (Hansberry 1.1). She is a mother. She is very stern with her son. At the same time, she can be very kind. "No. Mama, something is happening between Walter and
me. I don't know what it is—but he needs something—something I can't give him any more. He needs this chance, Lena." (Hansberry 1.1). She is concerned about the others in her household. She is gray because she can go from very stern to very caring. She just falls in the middle. Not all of her is perfect, but she isn't completely bad, either.
