  • The sounds (phonemes) /c/, /a/, and /t/ make up the term cat. The word cat is created when these three sounds are combined fluidly. Phonemic knowledge is when a child understands that words like cat, car, and caboose all start with the same sound. In other words, she is conscious that each of those three words starts with the /c/ sound (phoneme).
