The mediation of learning is an intentional pedagogical process in which a teacher (or another educational agent) acts as an intermediary between the content and the student, in order to facilitate, guide, and enrich their learning process. It is not just about 'teaching', but about creating meaningful conditions for the student to actively construct their knowledge. Main characteristics:Relational and interactive: It implies an active relationship between teacher and student, where dialogue, listening, and feedback are key.Intentional: It is not improvised, but planned based on the objectives and needs of the student.Personalized: It takes into account the context, pace, interests, and individual differences of the student.Formative: It seeks the development of cognitive, social, and emotional skills, beyond the simple transmission of information. Theoretical FoundationThis concept has its origins in the work of psychologist Reuven Feuerstein, who introduced the Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) model. For him, learning occurs more effectively when there is a human mediator who intervenes between the stimulus and the student's response, thus transforming the learning experience.Feuerstein points out that mediation allows for structural cognitive change, that is, the development of skills that not only serve a specific situation but can also be transferred to new contexts. Moreover, it is based on the idea that all individuals are cognitively modifiable if they are provided with a suitable mediated learning environment (Feuerstein, Rand & Rynders, 1988).It is also related to the ideas of Lev Vygotsky, who introduced the concept of the zone of proximal development. In this model, the mediator helps the student progress from what they can do with assistance to what they can do independently.
