When the Amalgamated Association asked for a wage increase Frick responded with a wage decrease. Frick decided to lock the workers out of the plant with a tall fence topped with barbed wire. Workers decided to strike and surrounded the plant to make sure no strikebreakers would enter. Frick had to hire guards to keep them out.
