Compare and contrast essays are multi-paragraph compositions that explain ways in which two (or occasionally more) subjects are similar and different. These essays usually compare or contrast ideas, beliefs, views, places, and things. For example, some situations in which you might contrast are writers different dictions. In other ways you might compare are the similarity of opinions on issues. The list goes on and on. These elements in an essay help the reader understand all aspects in which a writer is evaluating on. Although a comparison and contrast essay is set to demonstrate both similarities as well as differences, sometimes it only shows similarities, and at other times, only differences. A division and classification essay are like comparison and contrast essays, in which it's an analysis essay whose objective is to break a thing or idea, or an essay into bits for analysis. A comparison and contrast essay, however, intends to point out qualities and deficiencies in things, or explain bad and good aspects of an issue. This type of essay also makes readers more cognizant of the situations or issues being discussed in the writing.
