The theme of this poem written by Emily Dickinson is how the people who are said to be insane or crazy are actually more sane than regular people. “Is divinest sense, to a discerning eye.” people's perspectives are very different and contradictory. That's why this poem is mostly concentrated on insane and sane people. She was trying to describe each person's opinions, so she elaborated on her word choice. While she was writing this poem she wanted to state the reason while also involving everyone's opinion on it.

The poem's tone is ironic and during that time it was published it was also relevant to the readers at the time. Nowadays some people wont understand how to analyze the poem without the help of someone. As time went on everyone who read this poem would think something about the tone. But from my perspective the poem's tone is very irrelevant during that time and it is also kind of ironic. Especially with the backstory of the poem.

Her word choice for this poem was very specific, trying to explain each and every single concept. Through such a little amount of text. She really described how the insane people are actually the only sane people and how the sane people are actually the people who are insane. Instead of the other way around, which is why we think she is using the poetry term paradox in this poem.

The images being used in the poem are dangerous and chains. The poem says " Assert- and you are sane- Demur- you're straightway dangerous and handled with a chain" This means that if you express approval than you are sane but if you express disapproval to what she said than you are to be considered insane.
