I am able to engage my students because of how enthusiastic I am about the topic/course/class. I get the whole class involved and develop a wide variety of approaches (including making a mockery of myself) to help spread my enthusiasm. However, my weakness is time management/distractions. I am a single mom of two children and teach at multiple colleges. It is easy for me to get distracted and then have to bust it out at the last minute because I didn't pace myself. And then I have to tell my students not to do this...

Working at different schools, campuses, and off site at high schools, I find that technology and other aspects of teaching environment are very different everywhere. Sometimes, for example, I find that the overhead at one of my high schools may not be working. At one school, they might send someone immediately to repair it; at some schools, I have to submit a work order and wait a week or more. It is helpful, then, that I have handouts in addition to PowerPoint slides, so that I can proceed with my lesson . This strength came in handy last winter because of snow days, as well.An area where I am trying to improve is presenting the "big picture," or reason for using a certain lesson or content. I assume students will understand the assignments and their usefulness and that is not always the case. I have a recent example: trying to convince students who are anti-social media that their online presence is important. Honestly, my greatest weakness is my ability to also relate the material to students and their lives, the issue comes when I detour the class for long enough that, perhaps, it becomes derailed and must get back on track. Because my discipline is in history, it can be difficult to engage students to enthusiastically interact with the material. By offering opportunities for students to complete assignments in various formats, students can choose to how to demonstrate their retention. This prevents students from feeling that they cannot be successful in the course. I can make room in my syllabus for all these different learning approaches by offering a lot of extra credit opportunities. It means a lot of grading for me, but I think its worth it.

As for my greatest weakness is simply my inexperience. I have student-taught as a graduate student, guest lectured at some local colleges, and taught outside of my disciple, but otherwise this is my first semester teaching history at this level. A major strength of mine would be the years I have committed to learning the topic matter I teach. Teaching Ethics for the past thirty-five years, has given me much exposure to the topic and its application in healthcare. The experience brings real life ethical scenarios to the classroom for great discussions. A weakness is the inability to effectively bring technology into the classroom. Although I feel it is of vital importance, I admit I have not taken the time to embrace it.

I teach composition, so at some point, the students really just need to write! However, I integrate many demonstrations and chalk talks about how to use common technology to write better, i.e. WORD citations/works cited pages, editing, etc. I am exploring quick game-type programs like Kahoot to enhance the concepts. Sometimes I feel like I just don't have time to learn even more tech than we have here at GOCC and then determine how to implement it in the classroom.

A major strength is my ability to tie in the writing skills students are learning to real world situations. I have loads of stories and examples from personal experience which not only reinforces concepts, but shows that I am a real person, just like they are. In addition, it wasn't all that long ago that I completed my master's (as an adult), so I can very easily relate to the challenges students are facing in the here and now.

For instance, in my 8 a.m. class, the projector was not displaying my screen, and as I was going to demonstrate a revision and editing activity on a particular essay, I really needed this to work. I contacted IT, and the in the meantime, discussed overall revision activities and placed notes on the board. IT fixed the issue, but shortly after my 9 a.m. class started, a different issue occurred, more assistance was called, and they had to end up switching my computer in the middle of class. I think this is a positive because it is very easy for me to break the ice with the students. I did substitute teach in and around Flint MI, I feel that that experience made me more well-rounded as a teacher I'm able to connect with a wider variety of students. With That being said I feel that I do need to work on Some of my technical skills as far as putting better Power Points together I definitely feel that's a weakness. I need to get better at Power Points get better at the technical things meaning learning all the new technology. I do OK when it comes to technology but I need to improve it in order to make my class go smoother an In order to connect with the students better I feel.

I understand the hurdles they manage and often am guided by their needs to adjust timetables and deadlines.
A weakness is I tend to give too much information at one time, such as looking ahead at what we will be doing and is coming due, at the same time as talking about what is currently due. This is because some of the work is often scaffolded and I am trying to reinforce that work right now is directly related to work next and to continuously review what's coming up so there are no surprises or missed information. This is appreciated more at the end of a semester than earlier. I think some students prefer to hold in their minds the right now priorities rather than how they fit in the bigger picture and those who are adept at time management. It is the other students who need the continual reinforcers - that bore the first group. I can see how the 'looping' would be confusing.
I did not see how to 'review' my answers to the self-evaluation. My weakness is that I struggle to teach with methods that are different from the way that I best learn. I am very mindful of this weakness and consciously make an effort to give students multiple ways to learn the same thing. While I know that this a weakness I also understand how important this is. My sister is dyslexic and she learns very differently than I do. I know how much of a difference this made in my sisters ability to learn. When she finally found a teacher who was willing to teach her in the manner she best learned, she began to thrive. I am very approachable and welcoming, so most of my students are willing to communicate with me regarding their needs and desires for the class.
My biggest weakness is that in my passion, I can get talking and not take the time to listen. This can be intimidating to students at times and cause the quieter, mellow students to shy away from class participation and opening up to others. I spend a lot of time in the classroom trying to not let me passion overwhelm students. I often catch myself excitedly explaining things and realize that I need to allow for others to respond with ideas and thoughts. I have been through training to help me identify my weaknesses and combat that in order to ensure a great learning experience for all.
