Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand, a Serbian nationalist group, shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo. A number of alliance- and tension-related incidents followed, ultimately leading to the declaration of war by Austria-Hungary on Serbia and, eventually, the involvement of the whole of Europe in World War I. The assassination is believed to have sparked the war.
