Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand, a Serbian nationalist group, shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo. A number of alliance- and tension-related incidents followed, ultimately leading to the declaration of war by Austria-Hungary on Serbia and, eventually, the involvement of the whole of Europe in World War I. The assassination is believed to have sparked the war.

The trenches which soldiers fought were very long, deep trenches stretching for miles to divide the two fighting armies in the great World War. With these, soldiers had a very hard life filled with mud, rats, diseases, and an unending enemy assault. The war became stalemate meaning that now either side could win very quickly, so men occupied these trenches for months and sometimes even years. It was very terrible with an overwhelming number of casualties and living harsh conditions, trench warfare formed one of the most shocking sections of the war.

The French and British troops successfully stopped the German army's push at the Battle of the Marne, which took place right outside Paris. If the Germans had captured Paris, they could have easily won the war, making this battle crucial. The hopes of a quick German victory were shattered when the French and British forces pushed them back. This led to the long and grueling conflict on the Western Front, where both sides dug in and created trenches.

The Battle of the Somme stands out as one of the most significant and devastating battles of World War I, where British and French troops clashed with German forces. The aim was to penetrate the German defenses, but in the end, the battle resulted in over a million soldiers either killed or injured, with only a tiny amount of territory gained. Even though the battle didn’t lead to any major victories, it really brought to light the harsh realities and the heavy costs that come with trench warfare.

The Battle of Verdun stands out as one of World War I's longest and deadliest fights stretching from February to December 1916. Germany and France clashed in this conflict, with German forces aiming to take the French city of Verdun in hopes of weakening the French military. Under General Philippe Pétain's command French troops put up a tough defense to guard the city. Both sides faced staggering losses, with the death toll reaching about 700,000. Verdun grew into a powerful symbol of French grit and resolve, and people remember this battle as one of the war's harshest struggles.

In January 1917, Germany sent a secret message to Mexico. This message known as the Zimmerman Telegram, which asked Mexico to join the fight against the United States. Germany offered to help Mexico reclaim land it had lost to the U.S., such as Texas and Arizona. The British caught wind of this message. They shared this with U.S, when the public found out about it many Americans felt outraged. This led to increased backing for the U.S. to join the war. The telegram played a crucial role in the U.S. decision to enter World War I and battle against Germany

In order to establish a peace that would endure following World War I, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proposed his "Fourteen Points" in January 1918. He suggested for open diplomatic relations, water-based freedom, fewer weapons, and the freedom of people to select their own governments. His strategies creation of the League of Nations, an organization aimed at preventing future conflicts, was one of its most important elements. Many of his ideas were discussed, but during the European peace talks, some were changed or rejected.
