Going into this term, as well as now, the aspect of adolescent development that has always represented the biggest challenge is how to respond in a constructive way to students with destructive behaviors linked to trauma. When I was an adolescent I had many behaviors associated with my own trauma and I wasn't even aware of where they were coming from, particularly avoidance, which I have only recently recognized as a flight reflex. In the classrooms I have worked in up to this point I have seen many different types of disruptive behavior and I have found a few ways of addressing them, but I feel like so many of them only address the behavior rather than the underlying trauma that leads to it. As a teacher it is challenging to address the needs of all students when your classes are so big and you have so much work to do. My journey as a teacher will include an ongoing quest to improve my responsiveness to students who are experiencing or have experienced trauma
