Black churches in Alabama in the 1930s were lively and joyful. The church could not afford more than a few hymnals, members echoed back lines from those who could read theirs. Each service was full of energy, music, and praise. The building was in poor condition, unpainted, and it was the only one in Maycomb with a steeple bell. The churchyard was brick-hard clay as well as the cemetery behind it. On weekdays, white men gambled in the black church.

When Scout goes to church with Calpurnia, they were ordered to give money for the Robinsons. After church, Scout asks Calpurnia why they had to give money, and Calpurnia tells Scout Tim Robinson's wife, Helen, needed money because she couldn't find work. Calpurnia then tells Scout, when she asks why Helen can't find work, that Tim Robinson was accused of raping a white woman. When Scout asks Calpurnia what rape is, she responds with, "It's somethin' you'll have to ask Mr. Finch about." Cal approaches the situation in this way because she knows that rape, being such a severely tense subject, would be better for a father to explain it.

Atticus' definition of courage is when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. This applies to Mrs. Dubose because she committed to losing her addiction and she kept going no matter what. Mrs. Dubose died beholden to nothing and nobody. Atticus didn't want his kids to think courage was a man with a gun.

Tom Robinson was accused of rape. This is the cause of her inability to find a job. Since everyone in town knows this, nobody wants to offer her a job. Therefore, the church donates her money.

There is a routine every time Jem reads to Mrs. Dubose. In the beginning, she would talk to Jem about her favorite subjects. Jem would read to her for a while. Mrs. Dubose would then interrupt insulting him and his father's actions. Towards the end, she would have "fits" and a timer would go off indicating it's time for her medicine. Jessie would then ask them to leave.

When Aunt Alexandra moves in with the Finch's, she tries to become a "mother figure" for Jem and Scout. Scout and Jem don't see her as a mother figure, but Atticus makes them tolerate her. Generally, Aunt Alexandra seems to disapprove almost everything the kids do, and accuses Atticus of not being able to raise his children.

Atticus tells them this to please their Aunt and to tell them what others think. He wants them to know what they're supposed to believe, but give them the option to believe what they want as well. The kids are afraid because they believe that Atticus has changed. However, the kids are relieved when they figure out that he is the same as he always was.
