During the American revolution the American colonies were in need of international assistance in able to help fight the British. French and America representatives signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce. French officials saw an opportunity in the rebellion of Britain’s North American colonies to take advantage of British troubles. The French Government began to provide clandestine assistance to the United States, much of which they channeled through American trader Silas Deane. After Congress formally declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, it dispatched a group of several commissioners led by Benjamin Franklin to negotiate an alliance with France. On February 6, 1778, Benjamin Franklin and the other two commissioners, Arthur Lee and Silas Deane, signed a Treaty of Alliance and a Treaty of Amity and Commerce with France.

France wanted to revolt against the British after losing in the French and Indian War. They saw weakness in Britain during the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin was very popular in France which helped convince France to help the Americans. French created treaties with the Americans with some convincing. They gave Americans financial help and supplies in the form of weapons/ammo, uniforms, and troops/naval support.
