A few months after the studies began to be coordinated Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in a Motel on a balcony in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was a huge event that greatly effected the lives of maybe African Americans all around.

1969

The African American Studies Committee successfully created two for-credit courses in African American studies at VCU in 1969. African American studies appeared in the VCU Bulletin under interdisciplinary courses.

1970

Historian Ibram Kendi, "nearly 1,000 colleges had organized Black Studies courses, programs, or departments."

This ushered in a new phase for the discipline, with the establishment of journals, the hiring of faculty, and an increase in scholarship.

2010

In 2010, Arizona lawmakers banned courses that "promote resentment toward a race or class of people" or "advocate ethnic solidarity." The law led to its own backlash, however, sparking a growing movement to institute ethnic studies classes in K-12 schools nationwide.
