I found her story truly humbling especially since she was on her way to becoming a doctor but chose a different path wherein she felt she could make a bigger difference. I want to someday become a lawyer but after the talk, I realized that I could become a better person together with being a good lawyer. I can uplift myself together with uplifting others through good acts and choosing to help. I can choose the road less travelled so I may make way to help and choose to love.

I guess the desire to choose to love and help is something that got me going to feel more inspired to pursue being a lawyer in the future. I want to make a difference in society by choosing to do good. By being a person who knows the law, I would be able to choose to love and choose to help those being pushed around. I believe that I can grow not only in my future profession as a lawyer but, I can also grow into a more loving and caring person.

In a country whose culture predominantly has a preference for the medical and legal professions, I was amazed by her courage to opt out of becoming a doctor to pursue what she realized she really wanted to do: to teach and to teach lovingly. It's difficult to do so, but the fact that she's driven to make that her reality is very awe-inspiring. Aside from that, she emphasized the that we should aspire to be magaling instead of being matalino, and that really strikes me because for the longest time, I've always liked the idea of being "the smartest" in the room. But throughout the talk, I realized that being "the smartest" wouldn't be as fulfilling if that knowledge wasn't being to put to use well — in this example, it would be more fulfilling to use what I knew to help others understand things they're struggling with (provided I had the knowledge of such things). Luckily, this is still something I can do even without being "the smartest", even if it's just through simple things such as teaching my friends about quick social media management tips or Excel codes.

While listening to the talk, it made me reflect on my own childhood experiences and I realized that drawing was something I've always been fond of doing. I started out with stick figures and rather terrible attempts at drawing humans in a more cartoonish manner. Then, fourth grade came and suddenly my drawings improved to be somewhat decent, enabling me to have more anime-inspired drawings that my junior high school classmates told me were quite good. Though I did lose time to practice drawings when I started senior high and college, I still find myself doodling on my readings (sorry @ profs) or on random areas of my notes. There's just something about drawing that I can never let go of, and it's something I hope to keep honing (more consistently) as the days go by.

Sabs inspired me in her dedication and commitment to what she loved to do. I for one haven't found exactly what I want to do yet in life. I've always been of the mindset of working within the bounds of society and trying to work with what i can from there. That is - in this largely capitalistic world - make enough money, THEN help others by invoking change with the influence I might eventually gain. Don't get me wrong, I may still employ the same mindset in that I still want to be financially free. But my journey along the way towards that end shouldn't have to be one that disregards others or pushes them aside for 'later'. Instead, I can work towards my goals while helping others work towards theirs. I realize that I don't have to get to a certain point and then live for others, I can journey with them instead, and that's what struck me the most with her talk.

Same with Carlo, above, I too want to be a lawyer. I never particularly thought I want to be a lawyer to help others before, I was always just thinking that it seems very interesting to try and work within the confines of set rules and laws (and that includes looking for workarounds and technicalities in policies). I wanted to look for a sense of justice in the things that happen around me, legally as well, but mostly morally.

The injustices happening around us, along with the call to journey with others, made it a lot more clearer to me that I want to pursue law to help fight for the rights of people who are constantly being stepped on in our country. In this way, I can actually do something that I (might) love, lovingly.

I was amazed at how Sabs Ongkiko chose to be a teacher because even if she was set and prepared to become a doctor, she realized that the small and repeated choices in her life were centered on youth and education. She easily found her passion in youth and education. This reminds me that we are capable of choosing the ‘harder’ option, not only because of our passion, but because it is the more loving option. In determining what decision to make, we ask if it is the more loving option and in choosing the more loving option, we are able to grow ourselves and grow with others because we do not think and act for our own selfish needs. Thus, I also liked how she said that we should use our knowledge and talents to lift others up in order to better the lives of every person. This reminds me that beyond myself, there is a community of others to whom I can engage with and wherein we can all learn from one another. I am then inspired to think and act beyond my comfort zone and extend myself to others to maximize what I can offer for and with others.

As of the present, I am unsure of what career path that I want to take, but the story of Sabs Ongkiko served as some sort of guidance and inspiration. It made me try to reflect on myself and what I like to do in order to hopefully have an idea of what I want to do in the future. Ultimately, her story awakened the desire in me to pause and reflect if the decisions that I will make are what will allow me to be more loving, or if my actions are the more loving option. I realized that in order to be content with one’s self, one has to be truly happy and satisfied with what she does and this can always be achieved by being a loving person, regardless of how hard it may be because choosing to love does not cost anything and its fruits can truly be felt in one’s heart. Also, I am reminded that after choosing the loving option, our subsequent acts must also be the loving option. With this, choosing to do the loving option or to be a loving person in the face of any kind of situation, is a continuous process that can be shaped in our daily lives and is something that I desire to do or be.

Sabs Ongkiko's story inspired me to be more attentive of the tiny decisions I make in life. Oftentimes, I disregard the consequences of the little things that I choose everyday be it staying up late or not eating on time. This reminded me of how these small actions can turn into bad habits and later on shape the person that I become. Thus, by being more mindful and exerting more effort to make better choices, I am reminded that there is no step too small as long as it leads to progress and growth. Moreover, I realized that no choice is actually too small as everything accumulates and has either good or bad consequences in the future.

As an econ major, I am made aware of how my knowledge can help institute policies that is aimed towards the economic development of marginalized sectors in society. Furthermore, as I try to pursue my dream of being a lawyer, I realized that my responsibilities is not restricted to bringing justice but more importantly, it is to ensure that I am advocating towards the common good. This way, I am grounded by the potential difference I can make in the lives of those I serve in the future.

It inspired me to think more of giving back and sharing what I can for the good of the community. In all honesty, I found myself in a deadlock during freshman year regarding my college life. As a person not much oriented in business, I doubted myself with the belief that the course I went into (BS ME) actually contradicts what I truly want. With Ongkiko’s story, I am inspired to push through and persevere. At the present moment, I have reconciled my wants and the needs from this course. I am just still worried of what I actually want to be in the future. I hope like Ongkiko, I find my calling by the end of my undergrad journey. It may or may not be what I am envisioning now, but I am inspired to push through to see for myself.

After the talk, my desire to be of service for others became reignited. I devoted my high school life with volunteer work by serving as a catechist for a neighboring community beside my school. There, I was given the chance to impart my learnings to other children. It may sound bad, but my primary goal at the time was to earn points for my extra-curricular activities. Both this and academic performance are tracked by my junior high school to recognize the top students of the batch. Nevertheless, I felt a vague sense of fulfillment at the back of my mind when being in service. Now, I have been working on overcoming my grade consciousness, and I would say I am close. With that, my secondary goal ignited in my junior high years is slowly reemerging. I truly look forward to what I decide to do by the end of my undergrad journey.

I find Miss Ongkiko's story to be powerful. It inspires me that she was able to decide rather simply about something that she has dreamt of for a long time. The way that she was able to reflect on the smaller decisions she made in life is incredible to me. It's incredible because she was able to look back and trace her actions from the beginning. Her story is also so powerful because doing what she did must have took a lot of guts and a lot of shifts career-wise. I see that it was a simple decision for her but it is also one that is difficult in the sense that there must have been things that went down the drain like that med school application. It was a point for her to let go of some things and move to another path.

I now see how small and perhaps good decisions can change the way life takes its course. I'm awakened by how Miss Ongkiko was able to distinctly remember the choices she made before for the youth and education. This is something that I want. I want to be able to look back in the future and see a clear path with the clear and hopefully great decisions that I've made. By doing so, I believe that this will create a better future for me, one that would be built by the solid decisions that I've made.

In Sabs Ongkiko's story, I saw a lot of my own journey in discerning which college and career path I wanted for myself (for me, it was psychological therapy). Her story, however, went beyond just realizing where her interests and strengths lay—there was a decision to be a certain kind of person within her field. I am inspired to plan and reflect on, not only how I can get the career I aspire for in the future, but also how I can be the kind of career woman God would want me to be and others would need me to be, even if that means going outside of my natural comfort zones.

Mental health resources like counseling are already very scarce in the Philippines and thus any career in the field within the country would address a societal need, but I want to practice magis by deliberately taking my career to places and peoples where the need is greater, even if it means leaving my home in NCR or joining the less profitable public health sector. In this way, I will be challenged to practice the more loving option to situations where care has been lacking. I also want to educate myself in those areas of specialization and counseling approaches that the Philippines has great need for, whether because of their historical neglect or their necessity in facing emerging challenges. In this way, I might grow with the field and contribute to finding service-driven applications for psychology grounded in the contemporary context and struggles of my countrymen.

I encountered Ms. Sab Ongkiko's story before in my Theo 12 class. We read her column entitled, "Building Bridges", where she talked about her realizations as an Atenean and a public school teacher. For that excerpt, I was moved on the analogy on how as Ateneans we were taught to stand on a hill, but as we leave college, we have to become the bridge that lets others, especially the marginalized, stand on the hill as well by exposing ourselves to the system down the hill. We have to become vulnerable and use our privilege to break the poverty cycle, and for Ms. Ongkiko's case it was through education.

The TEDx Talk Ms. Ongkiko delivered now inspires me on HOW to become that bridge for others. Seeing how she came to find her purpose made me rethink how I've been going about my college life. Admittedly, I have always pressured myself to soar with high grades. It seemed that the pressure I put on my academics deprive me of the experiences that could help me develop as a person for others. I shy away from taking up opportunities thinking it would jeopardize my self-centered goal. I forget that college is the time to explore what my skills and knowledge could do beyond the career options 'limited' to my course. The way Ms. Ongkiko knew what her purpose would be through her initiative to create a youth organization and volunteer to teach in public schools for the summer inspired me to take on opportunities that I know I can practice on becoming 'magaling' rather than 'matalino'. I need start making decisions based on how I can pursue a life of love that will help my community rather than pursuing a life tied to grades and achievements.

This desire might not be as concrete as what others may have shared here but I think by beginning with changing my mindset will guide me to the person I can become. In my mind, I have always thought that getting a corporate job with a high pay is the success we all ought to have. The thought of getting the 'good' life is what I needed to attain to be happy. My initial definition of success blinded me of choosing the loving option because I disregarded my community. I need to rethink what I can make-do with the course I am taking up and understand what God is calling me to do. While I am still unsure of the career I want, this mindset will now help me redirect how should ponder on this matter. It doesn't seem like the most practical at first glance but it is the one that I know will deliver true success.

I believe success means pursuing a life of love that gives life to others and becoming an influence for my peers to do the same.

Most of the time, I am scared of the unknown and I have all these What-Ifs in life that keeps me up at night. With this, the story of Sabs Ongkiko gave me comfort to know that you can take the road less travelled. Even though she was set out to pursue a career in the medical field, she chose her heart's deepest desire. Also, seeing how enthusiastic she was talking about her job as a public school teacher, I realized that it is in giving more of ourselves to other people that we truly find who we are as a person and as a member of the community. In so doing, we will find what makes us genuinely happy. Hence, Sabs inspires me to not be pressured with the expectations other people have of me, rather I should always choose the more loving option because it will always be worth it.

After discerning, she knew what it is she wanted and had to do. The most inspiring here for me is actually pursuing her calling after realizing it. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision, especially after already finishing her pre-med. If I were her, I might have chosen being a doctor, thinking that all those years of pre-med would have been "sayang". More than that, she chose to be a public school teacher which unfortunately, often doesn't pay well. And considering the Philippine context and culture, she was probably judged by many. It was definitely brave of her to follow her calling. It also came to my mind that she might not even have realized her calling for teaching had she not taken the offer of being a teacher seriously. I realized that for many of us, including myself, it's easy to set our eyes on a specific goal, seeing that as our calling and ignoring everything that hinders us from getting there. But here I also saw the importance of pausing and listening that could maybe lead us to our true calling , the more loving option that we could have never even considered.

The talk made me rethink what I want to pursue as a career in the near future. In the past few years I have considered both going corporate and having a start-up with my friends. The reason why I want to go corporate is that I want to learn from professionals in the field, to see how things go on a wider scale, and on a more personal note, to have a more stable source of income. On the other hand, I also want to be a part of a start-up that would serve as my main avenue to do social good. But lately, especially with everything going on, I realized that I might have gotten a bit tired working on the two and have been putting more effort on the former because this was the easier and safer choice. The talk inspired me to reopen my "drawing board" and to start actively figuring out the main advocacy/ies I want to focus on and coming up with ideas again. I know this would be tiring especially in the long run. But this is the path that I currently want to take because I know that while developing and utilizing my various interests, I would be able to work with and help others as well.

Becoming a doctor would have still given her that role. In fact, she could even use her platform to be a blessing to her patients and to the world around her - I think choosing this option does not make it any less "loving". But the way she felt she had a different calling shows how God is so intentional in where He places us. I realized that while one can make the decision of wanting to serve their fellowmen, the Lord determines how we are to be used specifically as instruments of His glory.

This has inspired me to look back at my own specific purpose - what I am good at and what I am here on earth for.

Sabs Ongkiko’s story, to me, was inspiring because it was very personal but also full of learnings. Right now, I am unsure whether I want to pursue law school or not. Thus, I am able to put myself in her shoes and try to understand what career to take based on the little decisions I have been making in my life. Another way her story inspired me is to do more in order to be more. She kept reiterating that it is not enough to stick to the norm or status quo, rather we have to do the hard thing and act for the benefit of others, not just ourselves. Relating this to my personal life, whether I become a lawyer or end up with some other profession, I have to move and work in a way that is rooted in love. Despite it being a difficult option, it is something that I need to practice day in and day out because being committed to my future job can be one of my greatest expressions of love for my neighbors.

Especially in today’s setup, it is very easy to get distracted on unnecessary things and forget to pay attention to our calling, our purpose, and our passions. However, if we, like Sabs Ongkiko, learn to use the little things to understand the bigger picture, then a lot of things will be made clearer for us. In the same manner, I was awakened to instill that I should not only do what benefits myself. I have to remember that words and actions are powerful and so, they have the ability to affect those around me. Thus, I must always exercise intentionality in what I do and recall that my decisions are bigger than myself.

The thought of making big decisions based on what we want is sometimes prone to the sway of what we think we want. Basing decisions off of observable past behavior is a way to ensure that the future we create for ourselves is in line with the path we've slowly and steadily paving. Ms. Ongkiko's talk was also inspiring in that it's so clear that she loves what she does. It goes to show that when you choose rightly, you are also more able to give yourself more fully to the career that you choose. The satisfaction that she projects seems to stem from her love for what she does and the fulfillment of being able to serve others as well.

Her story reminded me that the littlest decisions that we make helps us identify and determine the character that we want to achieve which could help us decide when we are at a crossroad.

From the very start, Ms. Ongkiko's goal was the loving option. Whether she pursued being a doctor, or her becoming a teacher, it has always been for the benefit of others. It was quite remarkable how she was able to remember all her small decisions that led her to choose becoming a teacher than a doctor, but I guess, it was always what her heart desires. It must have been her calling, her purpose which God had entrusted upon her.

This talk inspired me to reflect on my actions and also to consider the effects of my actions to the community I am planning to serve. This gave me the right amount of push to let some of my inhibitions go and allow God to speak to me and lead me to my own purpose that He can use in his kingdom to bring Him glory, honor, and praise.

Because these are big decisions, like choosing a career path, these seem hard. At the moment, they are actually very hard. However, the speaker suggests a way to make it easier - to look at your past small decisions and figure out what to do from there. This is just like figuring out how to be a more loving person. It may seem hard, but I think we can look into ourselves to figure out how to be the most loving version of ourselves and realize that it was easy all along. Of course, this is entirely separate from having paninindigan to your decisions which is a continuous process which may be difficult at times.

However, as my family believed that it would be best for me to take up ME instead of Agribusiness, I got demotivated. After hearing Sabs Ongkiko's story, I was lead to reflect on what I can do for myself and for others especially if I don't find meaning and joy in what I'm doing –– and I realized that I wouldn't be able to achieve a lot if this is the case. Because of this, my desire for pursuing agriculture got reignited.

Sabs Ongkiko's story reignited the desire to love and care for others. As emphasized by our Theology lessons, love is a choice-- Sab could've had a life outside being a man for all men, but she chose to become one. Choosing to love can be tiring, exhausting, and painful, especially in a country where the system hinders tangible results. But if we all follow in her example, to be sympathetic and loving, we can inspire our fellow Filipinos to grow together and make a difference. Her talk makes me want to develop a passion and love my future job as much as she does, and I hope to make a difference.

Our small decisions embody our big decisions, so if we continue making selfish, ill-concerned choices that are too focused on our narcissistic desires, then what kind of people are we molding ourselves to be? Moreover, I found her vocation moving as well, as choosing the more loving option takes not only wisdom, but also faith in God and the courage to move forward with the decision. As someone who isn't that certain about her own career destination, I can only hope that when the time comes for me to make a crucial turning point in my life, I find the strength and wisdom to not only choose the more loving option, but most importantly, be able to discern what that is most clearly.

The story reminds us how help doesn't always have to be one-sided and always someone going out of our way for others. Being of service may be seen in our journey with others, and we may also benefit similar to how Sabs' profession and journey are driven by her passion to serve and protect children and their education. Lastly, she reminds us that our professions should not dictate what our roles and what our limits are in being men and women for and with others because no matter what occupation, our primary role is to always choose the more loving option, and there is no limit to how we may do these as long as these are aligned with God's love.

Ms. Sabs Ongkiko’s story made me have a deep reflection on my life practices. As someone who puts so much effort into doing well in her academics, I personally felt the need to have a reevaluation on what my purpose in life really is. Ms. Ongkiko had the opportunity to go to med school, but instead chose a life that involved the youth and education. The way she placed value on her small decisions during her life is really something to admire. Normally, these small decisions are things that people take for granted, and I admit that there are times I feel this way. Ms. Ongkiko inspired me to look at the bigger picture of life and also to become the best version of myself wherein I become truly happy and also make others happy as well. Her practices and decisions eventually helped mold her character and I can see how happy and content she is with how her life is going. Her call to become a person for others and become a person journeying with others is a reminder for me to also look at the wellbeing of my community wherein I will be able to help others rise up in times they feel unmotivated to do so. It may take some time to find my true purpose in life, but looking back at my past actions and decisions can help guide me in my path to finding that purpose.

Ms. Ongkiko reignited my passion to reach out and help others. Her talk made me reflect on how I can become a person for others and at the same time find what is the best for myself.

Sabs Ongkiko's story really inspired me when she chose to pursue a career in teaching after having already finished four years of studying Biology. It is common knowledge that the pay and benefits of teachers in the Philippines are not exactly the best and that a job in the medical field can guarantee a much higher pay and more opportunities elsewhere. Despite this knowledge, and the fact that she spent many years working hard to finish her degree in Biology, she still chose to pursue a teaching career. She did not think about her potential opportunities and pay as a doctor and instead chose to teach because she knew it was her calling and that this career would allow her to make a big impact on others by being loving.

I’m honestly humbled because instead of becoming a doctor where she can also help others, she decided to become a teacher where she felt she can make more of a difference in helping out others. Yes, as a doctor you are able to save lives, but in her case being able to help out the younger generation and guide them to become the best they can be is what she felt was the better decision in helping out others.

When she asked the audience what happens next after achieving their goals, I realized that choosing what your heart desires is indeed the best option because this very desire is what will allow you to determine that next step and continue with the path you have chosen. I know it sounds cliche but in a time wherein being selfish is the "easy" choice, a reminder like that is always welcome. She could have done less and live an easier life, but instead, she chose to be loving and to do a "thankless" job, all because she knew she was doing the right thing and wanted to set an example. I hope to one day have that kind of courage and dedication. For now, I try to follow her example by helping those around me, even if it "hassles" me a bit and to live my best life, by doing what is right, not what is easy.

It was clear that she was ready to become a doctor and she had clearly thought about it for a long time already. She has even invested her time and energy given that she had already completed her pre-med degree, and yet she still chose to do what her heart has always desired and what she has always stood for - the youth and education. She always makes sure to choose the more loving option whenever she makes decisions, whether big or small. She has inspired me to always think about how my actions and decisions would affect the lives of others. She reminded me that I am capable of bringing about change in this world in my own way; I just need to choose to give love to others in all the ways that I can. I am still unsure of what path I will be pursuing when I graduate from college in a few years, but I hope that like Ms. Sabs Ongkiko, I can figure out what my heart truly desires and that I can be of loving service to others.

I found Ms. Ongkiko’s talk absolutely inspiring because instead of just sticking to her safe zone and pursuing a career in medicine, she deliberately went out of her way and chose to become a teacher as she believed that this was the path that will allow her to serve her community and become a person for others. I like how she said that we get to decide how we do what we choose to do, and I simply found it humbling and heartwarming that she chose to be a loving teacher. She was also very dedicated and committed to choosing the more loving option in order to glorify and serve God—even if this entails going through hardships and going out of her own comfort zone. Ms. Ongkiko’s talk made me want to rethink my future career path. Personally, having our own family business, I never really gave my future career much thought. Her talk encouraged me to go out of my comfort zone and think of how my skills and talents could be of great benefit to those around me. I am reminded that in my life’s journey, I’m not really alone; hence, I must not only decide for myself for I am called to become a person for others and journey in life with them. Though the road to getting there might be filled with hardships and uncertainties, Ms. Ongkiko reminded me that this is where I will be able to grow and flourish as a steward of God’s creation. Her talk inspired me to veer away from self-centeredness and live a life rooted in God’s love—a life committed to serving and helping others, and a life that improves the lives of people in the community.

It’s so easy to be warped in our own personal achievements and desires, that we forget the most important thing of all—more than our ambitions in life, we are called to serve God in our own ways. It doesn’t just constitute our professions per se, but our thoughts, actions, and the disposition we have in life that can be directed to what God wants us to do.

What inspires me with Sab Ongkiko's story is how she is driven by both passion and purpose. Although she had to drift from her original college plans, she gave more importance to living a life wherein she would be able to "love" others more. Early on, she had already dedicated her life to teaching kids which already shows how service-driven she was from the start. Sab inspires me to reflect more on my life, whether or not I am living it with purpose. She inspired me not to limit myself with the current direction of my life, which is in business. Oftentimes, even when we feel like we want to pursue something else, we are hindered because of "hinayang." However, we must focus more on how we can further live our lives, attaining happiness and purpose wherever we may find it, may it be in business, education or whatever field.

It probably took the speaker a lot of courage to decide on becoming a teacher. In that single yet significant act of courage, she was able to choose the more loving option- a career path wherein she can make a difference in both her own life and the lives of others. My mind has never been clearer and this gave me the boost of confidence I needed to make a crucial life decision.

I'm not entirely sure yet about what to do after college- that's why hearing Sabs Ongkiko's story was an enlightening experience for me. Her story inspires me to look back at my past decisions- big and small- to see which career path would really fit my skills, interests, and passions and can give me a true sense of happiness and fulfillment. I was also reminded that there is joy in choosing the more loving option - the option that would allow me to live my passion and, at the same time, help and serve others.

Sabs' story inspires me to reflect deeply on every decision that I make and ensure that I choose the path that will allow me to make use of my gifts to respond to the needs of others, even if it means choosing the less practical option. It will be hard to go out of my comfort zone, but, as Sabs said, choosing to do so will allow me to grow as a person and make meaningful contributions to the world.

As someone who is going through crossroads regarding my future career similar to Sabs Ongkiko's story, I was inspired to rethink the way I viewed life. As someone who is usually goal-oriented, a lot of the choices I make is usually planned and are the choices I believe would help me achieve my goals in life. However, it made me afraid that if I wasn't able to achieve my goals, I had wasted my time choosing the wrong things for myself. I was very inspired by the way Sabs Ongkiko didn't view her change in career path as a 'missed opportunity" as other would. Instead, she believed that she chose exactly where she should be because that option was the most loving choice. I realized that I shouldn't base my goals to what would give me better opportunities, but place it where I would become a better person for others.

I have always dreamed of becoming a successful entrepreneur, but to be honest such ambition did come out of selfishness and materialism with "success" being defined as "rich".

We should never undervalue the small decisions or acts we do, since they are worth far more than we realize. For Sab Ongkiko, these seemingly little decisions led to a much greater decision of becoming a teacher. That prompted me to realize that no matter how small we believe our acts are, their influence on ourselves or others is far greater than we realize, and that with God's direction, we can always choose the more loving option, one step at a time, to change the world. We do not necessarily need a grand gesture; our simplest acts can evolve into bigger ones with bigger impact.

The first part of her talk, about how she decided to become a teacher instead of a doctor after remembering the little actions she had taken up to that point, was really inspiring to me. Even when she had already finished her pre-med and prepared her med school application, even in a country where teachers are underpaid while being a doctor can be very lucrative, she chose to follow what she believed was her calling and how she could help the community. I think I would find doing so very difficult, against pressure from society and from family, but her story inspires me for when I reach that crossroads after graduation.

With the current situation of our healthcare system, I am even more doubting myself if and when I am placed in a similar position, would I be able to handle it? That on top of the constant pressure I feel with being the first one in our family to pursue being a medical doctor, I feel like I am unable to find joy in the path that I am in right now because of how I force myself to surpass my limits to the point of myself being exhausted, burnt out, and the likes.

With her talk, I think I could say that I found a bit of comfort because of what she said about striving to be the best and not only who is the smartest. Hopefully, I understood what she was trying to say in this part of the talk because what she said made me realize that I don’t necessarily have to surpass everyone and prove to everyone that I am the best. I can be just the best version of myself who aims to choose the more loving options for myself, and especially for others. I can and should do my best without damaging myself in the process as doing so would hinder my full potential in being a person for and with others.

Sabs Ongkiko’s story inspired me to be a better person. She talked about her story on why she chose to be a public teacher. She studied pre-med and was on track to be a doctor but instead she chose to be a public teacher. She could have been living the “good life”, living in comfort and luxury with few problems. She chose where she thinks she would be most loving, not saying being a doctor is not loving, it just that being a doctor is not the most loving path for her. She inspired me to not only think of what is good for us but also what is good for the community, the more loving option. She is a reminder that in every decision we make, we must choose the more loving option.

It was truly inspiring how she had the courage and the passion to take on a different path despite how close she is to entering med school. Most people would just take the opportunity right in front of them instead of backing away from it and pursuing a different career. However, she took a leap of faith and here she is now, a teacher and doing what she truly loved without showing any regrets for choosing path—the more loving option.

I once aspired to become a doctor like she did, so I entered Ateneo as a Health Science student with dreams of improving the country's public health and serving people. However, by the second half of my first year in that course, I realized I was not happy anymore and I did not want to be a doctor. I shifted to Biology in hopes of expanding my career options, and maybe, continue my studies after graduating. However, despite how changing my course, I still have the same dream—to serve people, particularly the poor and the marginalized, who do not have access to medicines or treatments because they are either too expensive or not available in the country. I want health care to be more accessible to every person whatever their status may be as each of us deserves to live a comfortable and healthy life.

The story of Sabs Ongkiko inspired me to think about the decisions I have made in the past and to think through the decisions I will make in the future as well because these decisions, no matter how small they may seem, actually reflects our desires and crosses. As such, Sabs Ongkiko's story empowered me to look at the bigger picture in making decisions, and not just limiting ourselves for our own good.

The desire that was awakened or reignited in me is my desire to be a person who strives for the common good. I believe that even though this desire has always been on my mind, knowing Sabs Ongkiko's story made me reflect on this desire and consequently how I live out in my everyday life.

Sab Ongkiko highlights the value of bayanihan in her talk. As I see it, she explicitly states that one small action contributes to a bigger action. Her story inspires me to make decisions for the better of the whole community, not just myself. As she mentioned, if all of us put effort in making lives better, we would not have to wait for the government to do it. From this, I am inspired to be engaged in the community and light the spark, instead of waiting for someone else to do it.

As a high school student I was always involved in trying to make a change by joining school committees and doing my best to be in service with others. As college started, I have not been as involved in my community as before. This talk has reignited my desire to communicate and help people in any way possible. I do admit that I've been quite idle in terms of community service and I'd really love to take part in making a change once again.

Her story inspires me to look more deeply into the decisions I've made in my life to see where I am supposed to go. It's easy to rely on carnal wants or spur-of-the-moment interests. While these things can help us make decisions that lead us to where we want to be, they may not lead us to where we need to be. I'm inspired to reconsider what I want to do after college, and to base my decisions not on what others around me say or what I think might be "cool" or prestigious, but on what gives me life and has been proven to give me life ever since.

My desire for community development and creatively expressing myself were reignited. I've set aside these things because of the belief that they may not be very lucrative or prestigious, but hearing Sabs' words remind me that money and prestige are superficial considerations. I am called to go where there is most need, not where I am able to satisfy material desires.
