As a nursing student, I understand that nurses must fulfill their obligations, including ensuring safety, upholding ethics, and promoting health, even in uncomfortable situations such as facing racism and discrimination. In this discussion, I will detail an encounter I had and how I navigated it to meet my nursing obligations. This topic is important to me because as a future nurse, I want to be able to promote a safe and inclusive environment free from racism and be able to effectively navigate those uncomfortable situations professionally.

Supporting Indigenous Communities

Learning about the experiences of Indigenous communities in Canadian healthcare, including the stigma and discrimination they unjustly face, has profoundly impacted my approach to supporting future Indigenous clients. This knowledge has fostered my personal and professional growth in nursing, driving me to be respectful, genuine, and conscious of avoiding and challenging stereotypes in my practice. By doing so, I aim to ensure that the voices and concerns of Indigenous clients are heard and valued.

The topic of the Art of Caring has greatly influenced my understanding of providing care for a client. I have learned that care goes beyond simply fulfilling my role as a nurse; it involves taking the time to get to know the client, building a therapeutic relationship, and understanding the person as a whole.

Mental health challenges faced by Canadians

Stigmas surrounding mental health in Canada was a topic discussed in the course. Before starting the mental health unit, I was apprehensive about working with mental health patients due to media portrayals and misconceptions. After completing my placement I've learned about mental health and developed some skills that I plan to use in my future practice as a nurse.

I chose the song 'Black or White' by Michael Jackson because it resonates with my feelings about racism. The line 'I'm not going to spend my life being a color' particularly reflects my perspective. While I love who I am, I believe I'm more than the color of my skin and don't want to be defined solely by it.

I chose this artifact of the land acknowledgement because it highlights the importance of recognizing and respecting Indigenous voices. I believe that we cannot respectfully support the Indigenous community without first acknowledging their ownership of the land.

This poem represents the approach healthcare professionals should take when interacting with Indigenous communities. 'TO BE' demonstrates how non-Indigenous individuals should respond and interact with Indigenous communities, especially in healthcare. It emphasizes being mindful of their transgenerational trauma and understanding the importance of listening and only doing what they feel comfortable with. It also highlights the need for continuous self-education and above all being respectful.

I believe that respecting the Indigenous community significantly involves creating shared safe spaces for Indigenous people. This video highlights a safe space established at Trent University for Indigenous people and anyone who needs a peaceful place to sit and reflect. It is a space for sharing and understanding, but most importantly, for honoring the sacredness of the Indigenous community.

My experience as a perioperative attendant taught me the true meaning of caring. I had the chance to bring patients into the OR and introduce them to the nurses and physicians preparing for their surgery. Many of these patients were scared and anxious, and being the first person they interacted with made me realize how crucial it is to remain calm and empathetic. Providing reassurance and comfort was essential in helping to ease their nerves before their surgery.

This artifact was created during my mental health rotation it represents patients inner thoughts, illustrating that mental health patients often have numerous influences shaping their thoughts and behaviors, such as their diagnosis, family, and social history. As future nurse, it is my responsibility to create a safe environment for them to feel comfortable enough to share these thoughts so I can help them.

For my second artifact, I composed a poem expressing my interpretation of the thoughts of people struggling with mental health. Through this creative process, I learned that many mental health patients simply need someone willing to listen and take the time to understand them and their situation. As a future nurse, I plan to be that supportive listener, providing a compassionate and understanding presence for clients facing mental health challenges.

This is a photo of my clinical group on the last day of our mental health rotation. This photo shows the confidence that not only myself but all my peers had after successfully completing our last mental health placement. Thanks to our clinical instructor we really started to develop stronger communication tactics and skills to interact with mental health patients and understand some of their behaviors.

After watching my first C-section, I was curious about different birthing options beyond the common ones in Canada, like lying on your back or having a C-section.
