My name is Paula Murphy from the U.S.A. I am a former teacher of primary and secondary school, university and professional level students, a librarian and an audiovisual media specialist. In the past, I worked helping educators and their students use many kinds of media software and hardware in a variety of learning settings.

As my AI generated avatar indicates, I love cartoons, animation and computer technology that are used in teaching and learning in non-formal places like museums, libraries, community centers as well as at home or elsewhere with a relaxing drink. Topics like when the sun rises or sets as well as clouds and the weather that are pictured on the laptop are part of my current interest which is in building online lessons in the STEM/STEAM area for the use of parents and extracurricular teachers who contribute to the education of children outside of the formal classroom in the above-mentioned locations. Laptops and other computing devices like the mouse that is shown play a part in my lessons too particularly because I also have been trained by Makey Makey in one of their workshops to use design thinking strategies to teach others about this piece of learning hardware which operates as a replacement for a digital keyboard or mouse.

I serve as a teacher at Jamia Islamia Darul Uloom Lisedena Bilal (رضی اللہ عنہ), a religious educational institute. Our mission is to provide holistic education that combines sacred Islamic knowledge with essential contemporary skills to empower our community.

My motivation for this course is deeply rooted in our context: Our students and community face unique challenges, including limited resources, language barriers, and a need for education that is both spiritually meaningful and practically useful in the modern world. I believe educational technology, if chosen wisely, can be a powerful tool to overcome some of these barriers—by providing access to quality learning materials, facilitating language acquisition, and helping us track student progress in a structured way. However, I am cautious. I want to ensure that any technology we adopt respects our cultural and religious values, is truly accessible, and enhances rather than distracts from our core educational goals. This course seems like the perfect guide to make such discerning choices.

Our primary EdTech challenge: Operating with often constrained resources, our biggest challenge is to identify tools that are cost-effective, easy to use with our existing infrastructure, and relevant to our specific curriculum which blends religious and secular subjects. We need solutions that work offline or with low internet connectivity and are simple for both teachers and students to adopt.

My Interest

My interest in this topic is driven by the belief that the best tool is the one that fades into the background of a great lesson. In an era of "AI-everything," learners and educators need a framework to distinguish between tools that provide "surface-level engagement" and those that foster "deep conceptual change."

In my practice, I am deeply interested in how children learn, not just what they learn. I focus on creating meaningful learning experiences that connect curiosity, real-world phenomena, and interdisciplinary thinking. My work is strongly oriented toward process-based learning, where exploration, questioning, and understanding take priority over predefined outcomes.

I joined this course because I want to better understand how to make thoughtful and responsible decisions when integrating technology into learning environments. I design student-centered, collaborative and exploratory activities, utilizing educational robotics, unplugged activities, visual programming environments and digital creation tools. My particular interest is the equal access of all students to knowledge, regardless of their socio-cultural and technological background, as well as the strengthening of the digital literacy of the entire school community through collaborations and actions.
