Imagine being away from home and in a war. Sullivan Ballou didn't have any idea about what was really going to happen. The clash of the amature armies at 1st Bull Run was terrible. i feel like that he was really showing his feeling to his wife while he is explaining what he has been doing in the war you can tell he was broken, he word has such a realization of his life,he shows how much he loves sarah by telling her how he has been been,his word have the meaning like a poem they are supposed to be a letter but you can tell that he doesn't want to be soldier

i think it tells a story about what happened and how he felt in that moment he didn't feel like he was gonna lose his wife but he did think that he would always be with her even if he was gone so he sent her this letter to tell her that he will always be with her forever.

I feel as if he's really sending the letter because he knows he's gonna die soon, which he did a week later. I really like that he said "My love for you is deathless" it really was heart-touching and you could tell he meant every last word he said to Sarah. He was most likely drafted, but then again in the letter, he wrote to Sarah saying "I'll lay down all my joy for this country" so it really doesn't sound like he was drafted. He went willingly knowing he was gonna die in battle in Gettysburg. It's really sad to do that and let go of everything. Can you just imagine being drafted out to war to fight and not know rather or not your gonna die today or tomorrow or even later on in battle, leaving everything you know and love behind and only writing to them, and don't get me wrong at least you can, but the point is...you never get to see those people ever again.

Sullivan confesses his love to Sarah and his children. He wants Sarah to know he may be moving and unable to write again. He may have felt that knowing he was going to war he may not survive, He wants Sarah to remember him if he ever parishes, and they will meet again.
He has the courage and is willing to lay down his life for his country.

I feel like Sullivan Ballou really loved Sarah, I feel like his love was very genuine and pure. His message for Sarah was a very touching letter, it was almost like a poem. You can tell the letter was out of love and genuine because of how he put his words together. You can also tell how upset he was for leaving, for the war, yet he still found a way for a positive outcome. Sullivan loved Sarah and that he is willing to risk his life for his country.

My heart shuddered to see so much love in a single letter.
Sullivan Ballou wrote his last words in the middle of the war and it was for the love of his life, Sarah. Those words proved that Ballou really loved Sarah.
Being in a war is thinking of living or dying and Sullivan Ballou was aware of the risk he was going through, but he did not give up and showed great courage for the love of his country. Sullivan Ballou will always be remembered for the great words of his letter and the great honor he forged towards his country.

I feel as if Sullivan was a very brave man not just because he leads an army into war but also because he was able to even though he knows he would most likely die. It's obvious that he loved Sarah with all his heart so going into battle knowing he was going to die must have been even harder knowing Sarah would be left alone morning the death of her lover. I feel like if Sullivan had one wish at that moment it would be with Sarah one last time for even just for a minute. I know I could never be that brave. I would most likely never leave the one that I love but then there would be no hero to the story. No win for our team.

While I was in class hearing that poem for the first time, it almost made me want to write a pretend letter myself, like I was in the war Sullivan was in. I couldn't imagine the sadness, the anger, and the guilt of leaving my wife because of the war Sullivan was in. Sullivan is a brave and wonderful man who loved his wife, and who loved his children, and I can't even be myself for a few minutes without being a little frightened, let alone a war. Although Sullivan and his wife are dead by now, but I hope the two are forever hugging and kissing in heaven, their children there smiling too.

I feel like Sullivan Ballou really loved his wife Sarah because despite so much sadness, frustration and fear of being in the middle of a war, he decided to write her a letter. I think it was difficult for Ballou to express so much in a letter because after all it was her farewell. Giving his life for this great country makes him a hero. Such a story did not deserve to end but Ballou will be remembered for the great person that he was.

i feel like he loved his wife as much as he loved teaching and when he died on the field i bet that he had so much remorse for his wife and i feel bad because even though im not gonna get married i would still love to tell my wife i loved her 1 more time. but i bet he is happy with his wife in heaven

i think it took sullivan a lot to write the letter in the middle of everything while it was hectic. I think he wanted sarah to know how much he really loved her. He would think about her everyday that was his motivation he knew he had to write that letter and poem before he was gone . Or else he wouldnt of got a chance

Know you're going to die is a fate worse than the death itself. Especially if you have someone or something that keeps you tied down, like a family. Sullivan Ballou wrote these final words, letting his wife know that he loved her. Letting her know that he'll be waiting for her in the afterlife.

You can tell that this man really loved his wife more than himself. He thought about her more than the fact that he was at war. He wrote to her knowing he would probably not make it out alive and the only thing he thought about was her. There was also this part of the poem where he said even at death he will always be by her side. The whole poem was just filled with affection.

I think that Sullivan know that he has a lower possibility to survive that's why that he give a letter to his wife for say goodbye to she ,telling that if he die, the last words that he would say before he die will be her name for expresse the love that he has for her. well, I don't know what to say but it makes me really sad hearing things like this. They don't know if they're gonna make it back and most of them have/had families and most also didn't make it. And since most didn't make it those heroes didn't get to see their children grow up. so when I hear stuff like this it tells me how much they loved them and this country. furthermore, I know I'd hate to risk my life knowing I'd be leaving my family behind.

i feel like Sullivan loved his wife a lot because even tho he was scared, and sad, because of the war he still decided to write his wife a letter. Also, knowing he could die during a war he still made the time to send his wife a letter to let her know how much he loved her. He knew there was a possibility that he wouldn't make it back. Since, there was a war going on , and despite all the sadness he faced, and all the frustration he must've had. He used his last words to let his wife know that he loved her. He will be remembered as a great human, for fighting for our country.

Sullivan really loved his wife and he was very brave this letter is very romantic but yet again very sad he loved his wife more than life it self I think he sent Sarah that letter because he felt that death was closest to him but he wanted Sarah to know that he would always be with her Sullivan knew he would'nt make it back home to Sarah so he wrote her a letter basically telling Sarah that he loves her dearly.

I feel like Sullivan really loved his wife and he was very brave to write this letter to his wife. It takes a strong heart to do something like this, knowing he was going to die. I think the letter was meant to show how much he loved and cared about his wife and how much he would miss her. He took this letter to heart and made sure every word was heartful and sincere. The fact that he wrote this in the middle of a war, this should be enough to show how much we cared for his wife.
