I think by not making everything so obviously educational. Even at young ages, kids can get burnt out. We don’t know what’s going on in their lives outside of the classroom unless they choose to tell us. So I think it’s important to regularly take those opportunities to switch things up. Are you able to turn a check for understanding into an interactive game instead of a worksheet? If so, do it! We have to remember that these students’ “why” for learning is so important so we as teachers have to do everything we can to ensure we teaching with a purpose so they feel that they are learning for a purpose.

Set clear learning goals that are aligned with subject matter standards, but allow for multiple ways of showing achievement. This can lessen the need for specific learning accommodations.

Teachers can offer purposeful options for students to show what they know by first showing the learning objectives and activities. Students will know what it is that they're trying to do. Also, by letting them choose in which way to demonstrate their knowledge, instead of only giving them two options. A teacher can give students different/outside-the-box options so that they will be able to broadcast their strengths. There can also be guidance provided on how to organize and plan how they're going to express their knowledge. Like having students complete small tasks that lead up to the assignment.

You can offer purposeful options for students by allowing them to choose how they show their understanding of the material. For example, some students communicate best through writing a paper while others feel more comfortable giving a presentation and talking out their thoughts out loud. Giving them different formats to respond helps to support students different learning styles and help them demonstrate their knowledge in the way that works best for them.

For example, students can choose to create a presentation, write a short essay, make a poster, record a video, etc. explaining what they learned. This allows them to use their creativity, strengths and express their knowledge in ways that feel meaningful to them. This also makes assessments more engaging and inclusive while still meeting the same learning goals.
