Have conversations with them regularly

Attend the things, the ball games, the chorus assembly, the play, dance recital etc

I ask students questions in my weekly emails to learn more about them. This leads to a lot of two-way communication rather than one-way communication with students (I am an online teacher).

I ask students to respond to weekly check in questions. They are not always related to course content. I might ask what's your favorite ice cream flavor for example.

Get on their level. Each day of the week do opening conversations. Like Monday mindset. Like “what can you say INSTEAD OF this is to hard. Have them put it on the sticky note and put it on the board.
